RESEARCH EVENTS
Along with conducting world-class research, HKUST seeks to bring
international researchers together to share their latest discoveries,
increase communication across borders and spark new ideas.
During the year, the University organized many activities that
assisted discovery, collaboration and network-building.
The “Cosmology since Einstein” conference at HKUST in May
2011 brought together many leaders in particle theory and
cosmology from around the world. Prof Ping Sheng, Department
of Physics, chaired the local organizing committee.
Prof Ping Sheng, Department of Physics, also chaired the
workshop “Waves in Complex Media”, which was held in May
2011 in honor of Prof Zhaoqing Zhang.
To boost regional links and research insights, the East Asian
Postgraduate Workshop on Nanoscience and Technology was
organized by the Department of Electronic and Computer
Engineering and the Department of Physics in June 2011 at
HKUST. The workshop aimed to set up a unique platform
specifically for postgraduates involved in nano research
and based in East Asia to share recent work and research
experience, and to seize the opportunity to initiate and establish
international collaborations.
The William Mong Seminar Series on Nano Science and
Technology, which was organized by a committee chaired
by Professor Ping Sheng, Department of Physics, involved 12
senior researchers, their post-doctoral research associates and
postgraduate students from leading universities across Asia.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering hosted
the Trends and Challenges in Computer Science Research
Distinguished Lecture Series, including talks by Prof John
Hopcroft, Professor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics
at Cornell University and Prof Raj Reddy, Professor of Computer
Science and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, Topics
ranged from algorithm design to human computer interaction
and information infrastructure.
The 2010 HKUST Accounting Research Symposium featured
Prof Philip G Berger, University of Chicago as the keynote
speaker. The symposium was attended by more than 20
accounting scholars from overseas.
The Division of Environment organized a “Climate Change –
Elephants in the Room” Workshop with Prof James Hansen
of NASA, a leading climatologist and recipient of the 2009
Carl Gustaf Rossby Research Medal, as the keynote seminar
presenter. Prof Will Steffen, Australian National University, and
Mr Martin Lees, former Secretary General of the Club of Rome,
also gave seminars at the event. The workshop discussed
issues related to climate change science, population trends and
consumptive lifestyles.
