O
ver the past 20 years, HKUST has gained global
distinction with its highly international orientation
in focus and impact. To consolidate and extend our
international reach, in 2010-2011 the University has
been seeking to build its presence through extending
outreach to the wider international community, fostering
internationalization on campus, and providing our
students the opportunity to gain international exposure.
BUILDING WORLDWIDE TIES
Further links were established with different parts of the
world during 2010-2011, through the numerous overseas
visitors and delegations from academic institutions and
other organizations. These visits created the opportunity
for exchanges of views and enabled members of the
education community outside Hong Kong to strengthen
their knowledge of the University and its achievements,
and to create opportunities for collaboration.
Among the delegations were representatives from
universities and government officials from the US, UK,
Canada, France, Australia, Hungary, Saudi Arabia, Egypt,
Japan, Korea and Vietnam.
Two enlightening dialogues took place on campus
between President Tony F Chan and the President of
Caltech Prof Jean-Lou Chameau and Vice-Chancellor of
Cambridge University Sir Leszek Borysiewicz. The talks,
part of the 20th Anniversary celebrations, focused on the
new challenges that universities face in the era of global
education.
In addition, senior members of the University engaged
in relationship-building through visits. In May, President
Tony F Chan and Dr Eden Y Woon, Vice-President for
Institutional Advancement, made a trip to the US where
they went to top institutions in Boston, Washington DC
and New York. These included Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, Harvard University, The Fletcher School
at Tufts University, The George Washington University,
The Catholic University of America, The University of
Maryland, The Brookings Institution, Johns Hopkins School
of Advanced International Studies, New York University
and Columbia University.
During these visits, they met senior administrators
and shared the latest developments at HKUST on
collaborations with Mainland and overseas institutions
and the change to the four-year degree system. They also
held meetings with students and faculty members about
opportunities in Hong Kong and on the Mainland, and
gained useful feedback.
In 2010-2011, overseas ties were increased through
exchange, Memoranda of Understanding and other
agreements signed between HKUST and major institutions
from the US, UK, Taiwan, Korea, Russia, Japan, Italy,
Germany, France and Canada.
Examples include the School of Engineering’s International
Summer Research Undergraduate Student Exchange
Program Memorandum of Understanding with Princeton
University. The agreement enables a number of students
from each University to study at the other University. The
School of Humanities and Social Science linked up with
Peking University and University of Virginia to establish
a PKU-HKUST-UVA Joint Institute which will offer joint
training and research programs. The School also entered
into an academic collaboration and student exchange
agreement with the University of California, Los Angeles.
Over 100 universities, institutes and governments from
across the globe have sent congratulatory messages to
HKUST as it celebrates its 20th Anniversary. The Grand
Celebration for the 20th Anniversary was well attended by
leaders from around the world.
REGIONAL ENGAGEMENT
President Tony F Chan is the current chairman of the
Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU),
a regional alliance of 17 research universities. The
Association held its annual general meeting and board
of directors meeting at Tsinghua University in China in
October 2010. It held another board meeting in April
2011 at Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. The Association
provides a forum for the presidents of leading regional
research universities and a platform for exchange. The
Association seeks to contribute to development of higher
education and research and to the advancement of
the region.
The Association of Pacific Rim Universities, a consortium
of 42 leading research universities including HKUST, held
a senior staff meeting at Chulalongkorn University in
Thailand in March 2011 which was attended by Vice-
President for Institutional Advancement Dr Eden Y
Woon. President Tony F Chan and Dr Woon attended
the Annual Presidents Meeting at Tsinghua University
