Prof Chi-keung Tang, Prof Sunghun Kim and Prof Ke
Yi, Department of Computer Science and Engineering,
had their cutting-edge studies recognized, with each
receiving a Google Research Award from the global
internet search giant. This was the highest number of
awards granted to academics at a single University in
Hong Kong in the funding round results released in
Q4 2010. They received funding for their studies in
“Quasi-Dense 3D Reconstruction from 2D Uncalibrated
Photos” (geo/maps), “Crash Reproduction” (software
engineering) and “Computing Statistical Summaries
with MapReduce” (information retrieval, extraction
and organization) respectively.

Prof Oscar Au, Department of Electronic and Computer
Engineering, and his team are among the few
University teams contributing to the competitive Joint
Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCTVC), which is
developing the next-generation video coding standard.
Prof Au’s team has had three proposals accepted into
the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard’s
working draft. The first proposal on chroma entropy
coding was accepted at the Daegu (Korea) meeting in
January 2011. The second and third proposals were
on sub-LCU Qp representation and dQP calculation
method respectively and were accepted at the Geneva
meeting in March 2011. The HEVC standard will be
finalized in mid 2013.

In his paper published in
Ergonomics
, Prof Richard H Y
So, Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics
Management, significantly reduced sound localization
error. This represents a preliminary success in bridging
the gap between individual and non-individual head-
related transfer functions (HRTFs) for applications such
as spatial surround sound systems.
•
Research by Prof Fugee Tsung, Department of
Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management
and his collaborators on “A Multivariate Sign EWMA
Control Chart”, was published in
Technometrics
, the
flagship journal of the American Society for Quality
(ASQ). This article develops a novel statistical process
control methodology for complex system monitoring
and surveillance.

Prof Chung-yee Lee, Department of Industrial
Engineering and Logistics Management, co-authored
a paper on “Optimal Control of an Assembly System
with Multiple Stages and Multiple Demand Classes”.
The research was published in
Operations Research
,
the flagship journal for the field.
•
Prof Ricky Lee, Mechanical Engineering, has won the
IMAPS-2010 John A Wagnon Technical Achievement
Award. The International Microelectronics And
Packaging Society (IMAPS) is the largest society
dedicated to the advancement and growth of
microelectronics and electronics packaging with
more than 8,000 members around the world. The
achievement award is presented to a member
with outstanding technical contributions related to
microelectronics technology.

Prof James Thong, Department of Information Systems,
Business Statistics and Operations Management,
co-authored the paper “User Acceptance of Agile
Information Systems: A Model and Empirical Test,” in
the
Journal of Management Information Systems
. The
paper identifies the drivers of user acceptance of a new
generation of information systems, known as agile IS,
which are characterized by frequent upgrades with a
small number of new features released periodically.

A paper, “Equity Market Liberalization and Corporate
Governance”, published in the
Journal of Corporate
Finance
and co-authored by Prof Vidhan Goyal,
Department of Finance, examined why developing
countries exhibit relatively small financial impacts
associated with equity market liberalizations, which
open up domestic stock markets to foreign investors.
•
Prof Jaideep Sengupta, Department of Marketing,
in collaboration with PhD student Dengfeng Yan,
conducted a series of studies examining how
consumers form perceptions of product quality when
presented with information about the product’s
attributes and also its price. A paper based on this
work has been accepted for publication in the
Journal
of Consumer Research
. In another project with Elaine
Chan, a former HKUST PhD student, Prof Sengupta
offered new insights into flattery and its consequences.
•
Prof James Lee, Dean of Humanities and Social
Science, jointly released a public dataset titled “
China
Multi-Generational Panel Dataset, Liaoning (CMGPD-
LN), 1749-1909
”.
•
Prof Chang-tai Hung, Division of Humanities, published
a book titled
Mao’s New World: Political Culture in the
Early People’s Republic
by Cornell University Press. It
provides a path-breaking revisit to the interpretation of
the political culture of Mao’s China in the founding era
of the People’s Republic of China.
•
計算機科學及工程學系鄧智強教授、金成勳教授及易珂
教授的先進研究項目獲得表揚，三位教授各榮獲全球互
聯網搜尋器谷歌頒發
Google
研究獎，是香港同一所大
學學術人員獲得最多獎項，所獲獎金均分別用於「利用
二維未校正的圖片進行準稠密三維重建」（地理/測繪）、
「
Crash Reproduction
」（軟件工程）及「基於
MapReduce
的統計摘要計算方法 」（資訊檢索、擷取及組織）方面的
研究。

電子及計算機工程學系區子廉教授及其團隊對

出貢獻，現正致力制訂下一代視頻編碼標準。區教授的

•
工業工程及物流管理學系蘇孝宇教授在《
Ergonomics
》中
發表論文，研究顯示可有效減少聲源定位錯誤。這標誌
著就空間環迴聲音系統等應用及在收窄個體與非個體頭
部相關傳輸函數（
HRTF
）的差距取得了初步成功。
•
工業工程及物流管理學系宗福季教授及其團隊的多變量
非參數質量控制方法之研究已於美國質量學會旗艦期刊
《
Technometrics
》上發表。該論文為複雜系統監察及監控
研發出一套新的統計過程控制手法。

工業工程及物流管理學系李忠義教授合著題為《

機械工程學系李世瑋教授榮獲

致力推動及發展微電子和電子封裝最具規模的協會，全
球擁有8,000多名成員。該項成就獎表揚微電子技術方
面的重要貢獻。
•
資訊、商業統計及營運管理學系湯永亮教授合著題
為《
User Acceptance of Agile Information Systems:
A Model and Empirical Test
》的論文，並於《
Journal of
Management Information Systems
》上發表。提出用戶接
受新一代資訊系統「敏捷資訊系統」之因素；這個資訊系
統的特點是透過定期推出少量新功能以不斷進行升級。

財務學系高偉翰教授合著《

and Corporate Governance
》 論 文， 並 於《

》上發表。
•
市場學系石豁達教授與博士生嚴登峰進行多項研究，探
討向消費者提供有關產品特點及價格等資訊時，消費者
如何構成對產品質素的看法。該研究論文已獲《

of Consumer Research
》接受。石豁達教授亦與前科大博
士生陳苡羚合作進行另一個項目，就阿諛奉承及其後果
提出新見解。

人文社會科學學院院長李中清教授研究小組發佈中國
遼寧多世代人口數據《

據庫。

人文學部洪長泰教授出版專書《
Mao’s New World:
Political Culture in the Early People’s Republic
》，由康奈爾
大學出版社(

)印行。這本著作對中
華人民共和國建國初期毛澤東領導下的中國政治文化作
出了全新闡釋。
