RESEARCH FUNDING
HKUST is recognized by a range of funding organizations,
which assist the University’s researchers through financial
support of their work.
Hong Kong’s Research Grants Council’s annual
competitive General Research Fund program overall also
show the strength of the University’s capabilities and
accomplishments. Via RGC’s GRF program announced on
30 June 2011, HKUST researchers were awarded $106.4
million and HKUST achieved:
the highest success rate (45%)
the highest funding per eligible faculty ($240,000)
the highest participation rate (33.1% of eligible faculty
were funded)
Given that success in this competition is dependent on the
quality of proposals, as perceived by international peers,
and on the track record of the applicants, these funding
results are further testimony to the excellence of research
and scholarship at HKUST.
A collaborative research project titled “Protein-
phosphoinositides interactions in neuronal signaling”
was recently renewed and received funding of an
amount of HK$7.866 million from the Hong Kong
Research Grants Council. Prof Mingjie Zhang, Prof Nancy
Ip, Prof Zilong Wen, and Prof Jun Xia of the Division
of Life Science are the principal investigator and co-
investigators for this joint project, respectively.
Prof Benzhong Tang, Department of Chemistry, was
awarded HK$5.359M by RGC — Collaborative Research
Fund 2010-2011 on a project entitled “Development of
efficient luminogenic materials in the aggregate state:
fundamental understanding and practical applications”.
In the Research Grants Council’s first round of its Theme-
based Research Scheme, research on “Transforming
Hong Kong’s Ocean Container Transport Logistics
Network” by Prof Chung-Yee Lee, Department of
Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management, and
his team of researchers received funding of HK$13.292
million. The research team will holistically study ocean
container transport supply chain networks around the
world, at both the strategic and tactical levels. The team
will also develop decision support systems for Hong
Kong’s ocean container supply chain network.
Prof Chung-Yee Lee and Prof Ajay Joneja, Department
of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management,
have been awarded a research grant of HK$2.906
million from the Innovation and Technology Fund for
their project “Integrated Decision Support System for
Dynamic Vehicle-Dispatching and Scheduling with Real-
time Information under Operation Uncertainty”. The
project seeks to develop an integrated information
technology platform for passenger transport in real-
time operation and information exchange to reduce
operation costs and improve efficiency.
Prof Charles Ng, Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering, was awarded a HK$6.67 million research
grant by the Research Grants Council to study and
develop Green Slope Engineering for Hong Kong. He
leads a group of researchers from HKUST, HKU and
CUHK.
Prof James Z Lee, Dean of Humanities and Social
Science, was successful in several funding applications
for different projects. He obtained a grant of
HK$5.954 million from the National Institute of Child
Health and Human Development to work on the project
“The Liaoning Multi-Generational Panel Dataset:
Public Release and User Training”. He has gained a
General Research Fund grant of HK$1.260 million from
the Research Grants Council to work on “Differentiating
Community and Family Contextual Influences on
Socioeconomic Attainment and Demographic Behavior:
Shuangcheng, 1855-1911”. In addition, Prof James
Z Lee also obtained a grant of RMB150,000 from the
National Natural Science Foundation of China to work
on the project “Research Materials on the Population
and Social History of Northeast China since the
mid-Qing”.
Prof Jianping Gan, the Division of Environment, and
his research team have successfully conducted monthly
multidisciplinary field surveys in the Pearl River and
Pearl River Estuary to identify the water environment
and its physical and biogeochemical controls. The
year-long survey was the first in the region and has
provided valuable scientific evidence to tackle the water
environment in the region. This data set has contributed
to the developments of a National Basic Research (973)
Project with a funding amount of HK$3.07 million on
Carbon Cycling in China Seas. The team has also secured
a General Research Fund with a funding amount of
HK$883,200 with a project on Dynamics of the Pearl
River Plume and its effect on the coastal circulation over
the shelf off Pearl River Estuary and Hong Kong in the
wet season.
