10 prestigious universities as exchange partners on the
Mainland, HKUST provides ample opportunities and
encourage students to experience Mainland’s education
system.
The University also draws many delegations from the
Mainland. During the year, the University hosted over 40
delegations from Mainland government officials, including
Ms Sun Chun-lan, Secretary of Fujian Provincial Committee
and Ms Chen Xiaoya, Vice Minister of the Ministry of
Science and Technology. Ms Yin Xiaojing, Liaison Office of
the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR also visited
HKUST.
EDUCATION PROGRAMS
School of Science students learned more about different
aspects of Mainland life through a number of service
projects, namely the Northern Guangdong Service Learning
and Cultural Inspiration Tour and the Sichuan Social Service
Program. The School also organized summer internship
opportunities in Foshan with the South China Institute of
Precision Manufacture. Undergraduate interns were able
to apply their knowledge in a practical setting in the hi-
tech manufacturing base. In addition, they enhanced their
understanding of economic development in the Pearl River
Delta region.
Other student activities on the Mainland saw three
Technology and Management Dual Degree students
participate in the 7th Challenge Cup “Business Plan
Competition” in Jilin University, Changchun, winning a
bronze award. HKUST and Harbin Institute of Technology
also co-organized a study tour to Harbin. Eighteen
undergraduate students from the Schools of Business and
Management, Engineering and Science took part.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION
A number of HKUST professors received the Outstanding
Achievement Award in Science, organized by the Ministry of
Education in 2010.
Prof Joseph Hun-wei Lee, Vice-President for Research and
Graduate Studies, and his research team were presented
with a State Scientific and Technological Progress Award
(Second Class) by the Chinese State Council.
HKUST reaped two First Class and three Second Class
awards in the Awards for Research Excellence in Natural
Sciences presented by the Ministry of Education. This was
the biggest harvest among Hong Kong’s tertiary institutions.
Prof Lionel Ni, Prof Yunhao Liu and Mr Mo Li, Department of
Computer Science and Engineering, received a prestigious
First Class honor for their cutting-edge project on “Range-
free Localization and Localizability for Wireless Network
and IoT: Theory and Practice”. It led to the design of one of
the world’s earliest range-free localization and localizability
systems using RFID. They found a solution to the problem of
accurately obtaining real-time object locations in a wireless
sensor network and the Internet of Things.
Prof Shihe Yang, Department of Chemistry, and researchers
from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics
and Peking University received a First Class Award for
their project titled “Bottom-up engineering and properties
of nano-structures of transition metals and their oxides
and compounds”. They developed methodologies for
synthesizing monodispersed manomaterials (such as
nanoparticles, nanorods, nanowires and nanotubes) of
transition metals and their oxides and compounds.
Prof Karl Tsim in the Division of Life Science, together with
professors from the Peking University, reaped the Second
Class Award. They worked on the project “Study on the
chemical constituents, biological activities, quality control
and metabolism
in vivo
of medicinal
Polygala
plants”
which used modern technology to explore Polygala species,
to understand their chemical constituents, biological
activities, quality control and their metabolism within the
human body.
Prof Hong Xue, also from the Division of Life Science, and her
research team won Second Class Award with the project
“Fighting Mental Disorders with GABA
A
receptor as the
Target” which explored how to use the GABA
A
receptor
to cure human psychotic diseases. They aimed to provide a
new framework for curing human mental disorders, and to
promote the development of the drugs.
Prof Qiman Shao and Prof Bingyi Jing, Department of
Mathematics, received Second Class Awards. They have
achieved major breakthrough in the research entitled
“Self-Normalized Limit Theory and its Applications” on
Student-t statistic. They have enriched the limit theory in
probability, with far reaching influence for the statistical
practice.
