Prof James Kung, Division of Social Science, became the first academic outside North America to have
published in the
American Political Science Review
. His article, “The Tragedy of the Nomenklatura:
Career Incentives and Political Radicalism during China’s Great Leap Famine” (with Shuo Chen), was
published in February 2011.
An article entitled “Making Heritage in Hong Kong: A Case Study of the Central Police Station
Compound” by Prof Agnes Ku, Division of Social Science, appeared in top journal
The China Quarterly
,
a top China studies journal, in 2010. This explored collective memory and spatial politics, contributing
to sociology and cultural studies as well as Hong Kong and China studies.
Researchers in the Division of Environment, led by Prof Alexis Lau, in collaboration with South China
University of Technology, successfully completed a joint project funded by Fu Tak Iam Foundation.
The project quantified in detail the temporal and spatial characteristics of air pollution problems over
the Pearl River Delta so that sector and region-specific air quality management strategies could be
developed. A suite of general and specific air control measures were recommended, most of which were
adopted during the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.
The Division of Environment launched the first Air Quality Research Supersite, which enables real-time
characterization of ambient particulate matter in the air to strengthen understanding of the nature of
sources of fine particles. The research was assisted with a HK$9 million Special Equipment Grant from
the University Grants Committee and a HK$6 million grant from the Environmental Conservation Fund.
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
HKUST’s mission calls for the University to assist the economic and social development of Hong Kong
while its vision includes contributing on a national and global scale. Through technology transfer,
intellectual property protection and licensing, incubation of start-up companies and strong promotion of
entrepreneurship, the University is playing its part in driving forward society and creating the businesses
and young leaders of the future.
In 2010, HKUST produced 1,391 master’s and 151 doctoral graduates. Most of these talents joined the
private and public sectors, helping to diffuse their in-depth subject knowledge, skills, and innovative
outlook into the wider community. Our bachelor-level graduates, with their all-round education and
creative approach, are also making a difference to Hong Kong’s transition to a knowledge-based society.
Illustrating HKUST’s productive partnerships with industry, the University has been allocated $614.8 million
by the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) over the period 1999-2011 (that is, since the beginning of
the ITF program), the highest among local institutions. Over this same period, HKUST has also received
$665.8 million in industrial funding for contract research and collaborative R&D.
HKUST also boosts the knowledge economy via University-industry collaborations, R&D partnerships,
the protection and licensing of intellectual property, and assisting spin-off companies. These activities are
carried out through the Technology Transfer Center (TTC) and HKUST R and D Corporation Ltd (RDC).
2010-2011 proved to be another active year for the two units:
99 invention disclosures from HKUST researchers have been evaluated.
149 patent applications were filed worldwide, including full and provisional applications with
the US Patent Office and Trademark Office.
HKUST received notification of the granting of 46 patents.
113 R&D contracts were signed with industrial and public sector clients, worth more than
$70.6 million.
Continued incubation of seven start-up companies based on expertise and technology developed
at HKUST.
