The Knowledge without Borders Seminar Series, arranged
by the School of Science, ran talks on assorted topics
for its students and secondary school students. In Fall
2010, secondary school students attended seminars on
“Successful Leaders’ Book of Secrets”, given by Mr Dick
Ming-kwai Lee, former Commissioner of Police. Students
also attended the “Megatrends and The Shift of Powers
between East and West” talk by Hong Kong financial
columnist Mr Cho Yan-chiu.
In addition, 30 School of Science students co-organized
with Sai Kung District Office and Sai Kung District
Community Center a series of activities as part of the
LOHAS Sai Kung Community Service Program.
Under the “Bring Technology to Society” concept, the
School of Engineering provided enrichment opportunities
for local students and teachers. During the year, the
School held its first professional development day for
English Schools Foundation (ESF) science teachers, with
over 70 educators attending. The event marked the start
of a long-term relationship between the Engineering
School and the ESF, a leading provider of education for
international students in Hong Kong.
Prof King Lun Yeung, Department of Chemical and
Biomolecular Engineering, led a group of Form Three
students to produce a fluorescent pen to monitor
cleanliness in hospitals while Prof Pedro Sander,
Department of Computer Science and Engineering,
conducted an interactive workshop with 50 elite high
school students from local and international schools on
creating multi-image panoramas.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
As part of its partnering efforts with the community, the
University encourages its students and other members
of HKUST to participate in service projects and learning
through the HKUST Connect program. Projects range from
voluntary work to service learning courses, experiential
learning through scholarships and internships with NGOs
and self-generated student initiatives, supported by the
Community Engagement Project Fund. Other community
projects include the HKUST Connect and the REDbird
award scheme.
To share their expertise and boost public knowledge of
the latest developments in their field, faculty members
of the Business School have regularly written influential
newspaper articles on Hong Kong, Mainland China and
global economies.
GENEROUS DONATIONS
HKUST also continued to benefit from the community’s
own spirit of giving and generosity. During 2010-2011,
the University was the grateful recipient of several major
donations, which will enable HKUST to pursue its vision
to move to the next level of academic excellence in
subsequent years.
The University received a HK$90 million donation from the
Chow Tai Fook Cheng Yu Tung Fund for the construction
of a Research and Academic Building. The cost of
construction was estimated to be approximately HK$480.3
million, of which HK$360.2 million was funded by the
government and the remaining cost was borne by private
donations. Construction will start in early 2012. Value
Partners Group Limited contributed close to $10 million
to jointly launch the Value Partners Center for Investing
at the School for Business and Management. It supported
research and training on investment management.
The President’s 20th Anniversary Challenge special
donation matching program for endowed professorship
donations was launched in April 2011 in conjunction with
the University’s 20th Anniversary. The program is expected
to significantly assist the University in attracting top
talents in the highly competitive global academic arena
and in recognizing and retaining its own distinguished
faculty. It calls for a donation of $10 million for each
endowed professorship, which will be matched dollar-for-
dollar by the University to form a permanent endowment
of $20 million. The annual return from the endowment
will support the academic and research activities of the
professor appointed. As of June 2011, two pledges were
confirmed and they were from Kerry Holdings Limited and
Wong Check She Charitable Foundation respectively.
