I
t is part of HKUST’s long-term goal to capitalize its
presence on the Mainland and to strengthen its wide-
ranging connections with Mainland China. By forming
innovative partnerships and collaborations, extending
our education and research base to Mainland China and
encouraging outreach by our faculty members and students,
HKUST continues to leverage on the nation’s strengths and
investment in education, science and technology. Building
on these solid links, the University opens up opportunities
and work towards its vision of contributing to the
Mainland’s social and economic development.
Working together with Mainland academic institutions,
government partners and industry, HKUST has established
several platforms on the Mainland to extend the University’s
research and training opportunities. These include the
HKUST Shenzhen Industry, Education and Research (IER)
Building in the Shenzhen Virtual University National
University Science and Technology Park; the PKU-HKUST
Shenzhen Medical Center; and the Fok Ying Tung Graduate
School in Nansha.
HKUST FOK YING TUNG GRADUATE
SCHOOL
HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School (FYTGS) in Nansha
continues to be HKUST’s important platform in the Pearl
River Delta and on the Mainland. It gives researchers and
postgraduate students the unique opportunity to work
directly on research projects with industry. This academic-
industry combination and interdisciplinary education makes
the FYTGS program unique.
HKUST SHENZHEN IER BUILDING
HKUST had been collaborating with Shenzhen in research,
technology incubation and training for over a decade. With
the completion of the HKUST Shenzhen Industry, Education
and Research (IER) Building, HKUST will continue to reach
new heights as it extends its presence in the Pearl River
Delta Region.
Occupants of the Building include incubating companies set
up by faculty, students and alumni. It houses laboratories
for high-impact research activities. One of them is the State
Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at HKUST, which
was approved by The Ministry of Science and Technology
of China to advance frontier research in neuroscience. It
also provides education and training facilities for HKUST’s
Executive MBA program.
With the HKUST Shenzhen IER Building, HKUST aspires to
make a greater contribution to the economic, research and
technological development of Hong Kong and the region.
THE PKU-HKUST SHENZHEN MEDICAL
CENTER
The PKU-HKUST Shenzhen Medical Center is a joint venture
between the Shenzhen Municipal Government, Peking
University and HKUST. The Center aims to leverage on the
strengths of the two universities to integrate research,
education clinical service and industry expertise to nurture
talents in clinical medicine, life science, biotechnology
and biomedicine. With over 30 faculty, research and staff
members, the Center offers MD and PhD dual degree for
students.
ZHEJIANG ADVANCED MANUFACTURING
INSTITUTE
HKUST has another important presence on the Mainland
in the Zhejiang Advanced Manufacturing Institute (ZAMI)
in Hangzhou. ZAMI was co-established by HKUST,
Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Department
and Hangzhou Yuhang District Government in 2004 to
collaborate with local partners in R&D projects related to
the advancement of design and manufacturing technology.
ZAMI has now successfully developed executive training
programs and technology transfer, and provides HKUST with
a solid bridge head in the Yangtze River Delta. Working with
the local government in Zhejiang Province, ZAMI launched
workshops for Mainland industry leaders. Attending the
workshops were CEOs and chief operating officers from
companies.
HANGZHOU IoT INTELLIGENT TECHNOLOGY
CENTER
In 2011, in association with six engineering school
departments and 11 research laboratories, ZAMI successfully
started the HKUST Hangzhou Internet of Things Intelligence
Technology Center. It is jointly established by HKUST and
the government of Yuhang, Hangzhou. This will seek
to integrate capabilities and create breakthrough core
technologies and applications for the Internet of Things
(IoT) by developing basic and applied technology for an
“Intelligent IoT Integrated System”, which integrates
HKUST’s RFID smart tag technology, sensor technology,
RFID reader technology, nanostructured material and
sensor technology, and pervasive computing and database
