Joint work by Prof Xiaoping Wang and Prof Tiezheng
Qian, Department of Mathematics, together with
Prof Ping Sheng, Department of Physics and other
researchers resulted in the important publication
“Nanoscale Interfacial Phenomena in Complex Fluids”,
which appeared in
Solid State Communications
.

The research group led by Prof C T Chan, Department
of Physics, has demonstrated that it is possible to
design dielectric photonic crystals as if they had near-
zero dielectric constants. The realization of this peculiar
characteristic in an all-dielectric media opens new
possibilities for the manipulation of light without losses
at design-specific frequencies. This breakthrough was
published in the renowned journal
Nature Materials
.

HKUST was ranked third globally for the impact of
papers published in
Physical Review B
, a leading
publication in the field of condensed matter and
materials physics.
•
Prof Khaled Ben Letaief, Dean of Engineering, gained
further recognition as an international leader in his
field by being honored and selected as ISI Highly
Cited Researcher by Thomson Reuters in the field
of Computer Science and Engineering. He joins an
elite club of less than half of 1% of all published
researchers in the world who are recognized among
the 250 top and most-cited researchers in a defined
discipline within a specific time-period. Honoring
the fundamental contributions made in 21 broad
subject categories in life sciences, medicine, physical
sciences, engineering and social sciences, ISI Highly
Cited Researchers are individuals who are the most
highly cited in their fields and inclusion in this list is
taken as a measure of the esteem of these scientific
researchers and is used, for example, by the Academic
Ranking of World Universities. He is a Fellow of IEEE
and is currently serving as the Vice-President of the
IEEE Communications Society. He is also the recipient
of many other international distinguished awards
including the prestigious IEEE Marconi Prize Award in
Wireless Communications.

HKUST professors developed a smart anti-microbial
coating that has the longest-lasting effect against the
widest range of microbes. The revolutionary coating
can kill 99.9 per cent of bacteria and viruses within
one minute. It could rapidly inactive bacteria, fungal
and mold spores. It was invented by the team of
Prof King Lun Yeung, Department of Chemical and
Biomolecular Engineering and Division of Environment,
Prof Joseph Kwan, Director of the Health, Safety
and Environment Office, and Prof Arthur Lau of
the Institute for Environment and Adjunct Assistant
Professor of Department of Chemical and Biomolecular
Engineering and Division of Environment. Compared
with conventional disinfectants, the coating is
effective for at least 30 days. It rapidly responds to
contamination from touch or droplets, releasing a
larger dose of disinfectant. The Hospital Authority is
running pilot programs and patents are being sought
by HKUST in the US, Europe, India, Australia, South
Korea, Mexico, Mainland China and Taiwan.

Prof Joseph Hun-wei Lee, Vice-President for Research
and Graduate Studies and Chair Professor of Civil
and Environmental Engineering, has received a 2010
State Scientific and Technological Progress Award
(Second Class) from the Chinese State Council. The
project “Buoyant Jets in Complex Environments —
Theory, Innovative Technology and Application”
makes it feasible to predict the mixing and dilution
of wastewater in complex ocean currents, leading
to the development of software that has worldwide
applications in the design of facilities involving multiple
sewage discharges into the marine environment. It is
based on environmental hydraulics and engineering
research funded by the Croucher Foundation,
the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and the
Innovation and Technology Commission.

Prof Qian Zhang, Department of Computer Science
and Engineering, and her team have been conducting
pioneering studies into “cognitive radio”, intelligent
technology that can flexibly manage dynamic spectrum
resources and enhance usage by searching out idle
spectrum. The team has completed an unprecedented
survey and analysis of the comprehensive usage of
spectrum in China and proposed for the first time a
method to optimize usage by primary and secondary
users. Cognitive radio is an active research area at
HKUST with contributions from the Department
of Electronic and Computer Engineering as well as
Computer Science and Engineering.

To create a massive shot, Prof Pedro Sander,
Department of Computer Science and Engineering,
and his team of researchers stitched together 11,000
18-megapixel photographs, creating a picture of the
Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro with a resolution of
150 billion pixels. The picture set the world record in
September 2010. Earlier in July, the group produced
a photo taken from the famous statue of Christ the
Redeemer at Rio de Janeiro and broke the record at
that time.

物理學系陳子亭教授的研究小組證明將非傳導性光子晶體設
計成接近零的非傳導性常數。科研人員認識全非傳導性媒介
的獨有特徵,可帶來操控光線的可能,而不會導致設計頻率
的損耗。此突破性發現已於聲譽卓著的《
Nature Materials
》
中發表。

化學工程及生物分子工程學系楊經倫教授、科大健康、安全
及環境處處長關繼祖教授、環境研究所與環境學部及化學工
程及生物分子工程學系劉培生教授及其團隊成功研製智能殺
菌塗層,能在一分鐘內殺滅
99.9%
的細菌及病毒,迅速殺
滅細菌、霉菌和真菌。它較之傳統消毒劑更能迅速對來自接
觸或污液的污染物產生反應,而且持久力達
30
日。醫院管
理局正進行試驗計劃,研究團隊並於美國、歐洲、印度、澳
洲、南韓、墨西哥、內地及台灣申請專利。

科大研發及研究生教育副校長兼土木及環境工程學系講座教
授李行偉教授憑著「複雜環境下水力射流新理論、關鍵技術
及應用」研究項目,獲得國務院頒予
2010
年國家科學技術
進步獎二等獎。該項目有助預測污染物混合和稀釋的狀況。
團隊並成功開發軟件,其設計可應用在世界各地不同的污水
處理及海洋環境。此環境水力學及工程應用研究項目獲裘槎
基金會、香港研究資助局及創新及科技基金的資助。

計算機科學及工程學系張黔教授及其團隊進行認知無線電的
先導研究,有助靈活管理動態頻譜資源,並透過搜尋閒置頻
譜來提升使用量。該團隊已完成首次分析內地頻譜的全面使
用情況的報告,並建議優化初級及次級使用者的使用方式。
科大電子及計算機工程學系、與計算機科學及工程學系共同
合作,進行無線電認知範圍的研究。

計算機科學及工程學系辛達德教授及其團隊將
11,000
幅
1,800
萬像素的照片縫製成一幅巴西里約熱內盧的照片,解
像度高達
1,500
億像素,於
2010

月創下世界紀錄。早於

月,他已製作里約熱內盧耶穌像的高解像照片,並打破當
時的紀錄。
