s a major initiative of the University’s 2011-2016
Strategic Plan, the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS)
is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge to meet
the great challenges of the 21st century. Aiming to bring
together the most brilliant minds to drive cutting-edge
discovery and scholarship, IAS aspires to be a premier
intellectual center in Asia and beyond, a trailblazer in the
frontiers of knowledge; a global incubator of scientific
breakthroughs and intellectual leaders; and a platform for
innovation and scientific development in Hong Kong and
Greater China.
Prof Henry Tye, a theoretical physicist with a major
focus on string theory and known for his contribution
to cosmology, became Director of the IAS in 2011. His
inaugural lecture centered on “Does the Universe Have a
Beginning” received enthusiastic response.
IAS is targeting great minds to join the ranks of IAS
Professors, IAS Senior Fellows, IAS Fellows, Visiting
Members, Senior Visiting Fellows, Postdoctoral Fellows
and postgraduate students to conduct frontier research.
The Institute takes pride in its 26 Visiting Members who
are internationally renowned in their respective fields.
Among the group, two are Nobel Laureates and the
vast majority are members of national academies or of
equivalent stature.

To develop itself as a hub for topical research programs in
the region, IAS piloted a six-month Cosmology and String
Theory program in January 2011. Since its inauguration
in 2006, IAS has organized some 180 academic events,
including 22 lectures given by 17 Nobel Laureates.
IAS not only provides an excellent platform for scholarly
activities but is equally committed to serving the local
community. One example of this in 2010-2011 saw
IAS sponsor an outreach program targeting secondary
school students to introduce Albert Einstein and promote
fundamental science.
The Institute has succeeded in securing government seed
funding and support for capital construction as well as
funding support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club. In
addition, the Institute received enthusiastic support from the
community. Donations and pledges have been received from
Dr Larry Yung, Lo Ka Chung Charitable Foundation,
Dr Helmut Sohmen and Prof Anna Pao Sohmen, Ting Tsung
& Wei Fong Global Foundation, Si Yuan Foundation,
The Bank of East Asia Limited, Tin Ka Ping Foundation,
and UC RUSAL.
During 2010-2011, we made progress on the construction
of the IAS Academic Building. Located atop the main
campus with a spectacular sea view, the five-storey building
houses a 200-seat lecture theater, an open auditorium,
seminar rooms, offices and amenities for students and
staff.
