HKUST 2010-2011 Annual Report
61
Spin-off companies continued to provide success stories
in 2010-2011, while the University arranged special
events and regular activities to promote entrepreneurship.
The University has nurtured 46 start-up companies to
date through its HKUST Entrepreneurship Center which
is dedicated to advancing hi-tech entrepreneurship
education, facilitating knowledge transfer activities
at HKUST, and business incubation. An important
element of this championing of new businesses is the
Entrepreneurship Program, which was introduced in 1999
to assist faculty, staff and students in the establishment of
technology-based start-up companies.
The following gives some of the year’s highlights:
•
Gene-Vinate Limited, a member of the
Entrepreneurship Program, received a patent from
Taiwan for its “Method and Composition for Treating
Skin Wounds with Epidermal Growth Factor”. This was
the company’s third patent following the granting of
patents in the US and China.
•
Electronic and Computer Engineering Adjunct
Professor and HKUST’s first PhD graduate Prof Jack Lau
achieved further success in June when his consumer
electronics solutions company, Perception Digital, was
transferred from the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM)
of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange to the Main Board.
The company became the first venture established
under the Entrepreneurship Program to obtain a listing
when it was listed on the GEM in December 2009.
•
HKUST’s first Entrepreneurship Day held at HKUST
in October 2010 proved a huge success. Nearly 300
experienced and aspiring entrepreneurs took part in
the event, organized by the Entrepreneurship Center,
to promote HKUST entrepreneurship and facilitate
networking. Speakers included Legislative Councillor
for Information Technology Dr Samson Tam and a host
of alumni entrepreneurs.
•
The first annual HKUST MBA Entrepreneurship
Conference was held in October 2010. The conference
was organized by the MBA Alumni Association
in partnership with the School of Business and
Management and The Entrepreneurs’ Network (TEN)
on the theme “Leveraging the China Market”. More
than 80 MBA, Executive MBA, exchange students and
alumni attended.
•
The second HKUST Asian Entrepreneurship
Roundtable, arranged by The Center for Asian Family
Business and Entrepreneurship Studies brought
together 100 academics and market participants from
diverse industries and countries. Under discussion
were topics such as financing growth for the region’s
entrepreneurs, corporate entrepreneurship in Asia, whether
Asian entrepreneurs are different, and the challenges of
globalizing Asian entrepreneurial businesses.
•
The Entrepreneurship Center’s Knowledge Café arranged
experience-sharing sessions between March and June 2011
for its Special Interest Groups. The groups are organized
in line with the University’s five high-impact research
areas. The sessions invited active entrepreneurs to provide
industry updates and engage in interactive discussion of
their experiences. Interest group members were also able
to get to know each other, encouraging the development
of working relationships.
•
The Entrepreneurship Center organized a series of practical
seminars on how to “Be Your Own Boss” from February to
April 2011, featuring seasoned industrialists.
•
Mr Frank Wang and Mr Jianyu Song from the School
of Engineering succeeded in putting their self-designed
unmanned helicopter on an unprecedented autonomous
flight across the world’s deepest canyon — the Yarlung
Zangbo Grand Canyon, dubbed “the last territory of
mystery on earth”. The iFlight Technology team, led by
Prof Zexiang Li, received the Third Runner-up award In the
HKUST 2011 Entrepreneurship Competition. They founded
the company Dajiang Innovation Technology Co, Ltd (DJI),
which is now one of the world’s leading developers and
manufacturers of helicopter autopilot systems.
•
The championship of the HKUST 2011 Entrepreneurship
Competition was Wah Kin Holdings Ltd whose hair-testing
technology provides fast, accurate reports on people’s
health. It was followed by LEDoS, a breakthrough display
technology based on proprietary micro-projection devices,
Allegro IQ, which uses innovative technologies to make
music education more effective, and iFlight. The Student
Award went to Bull B Tech, with its streamlined business-
to-customer process which has wide applications in the
retail industry. The competition saw over 120 teams enter,
with 11 chosen as finalists. It was supported by venture
capitalist companies including the Morningside Group, IDG
Venture Capital, and Northern Light Venture Capital.
•
Nine Technology and Management Dual Degree students
were nominated to join the MIT Global Startup Workshop
2011, held in Seoul, Korea in March. The event is
the world’s premier workshop dedicated to fostering
entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystems globally,
attracting entrepreneurial leaders, financiers, students,
professors, government agencies and private parties. Third-
year student, Kanishk Bali, won third prize in the Elevator
Pitch Competition, competing against more than 40 other
