technologies. The Internet of Things industry is listed as one
of the most significant strategic industries in China’s 12th
Five-Year Plan.
HKUST LED-FPD TECHNOLOGY R&D
CENTER
HKUST and the Foshan Municipal Government jointly
established the HKUST LED-FPD Technology R&D Center
at Foshan, Guangdong in 2010. Leveraging on LED’s high
energy efficiency and nature of being environmentally-
friendly, the Center aims to perform applied research on LED
and develop packaging and manufacturing technologies to
benefit local industries. The Foshan Municipal Government
will be providing a start-up funding of RMB 25,000,000
as well as providing 1,800 sq m space in the Nanhai
District. With LED packaging technologies being its core
competence, the Center is planning six technology groups,
namely Design and Simulation Group, Product Analysis
and Reverse Engineering Group, Material Development
and Characterization Group, Process Development
and Prototyping Group, Product Qualification and
Standardization Group and Reliability and Failure Analysis
Group.
During the year, all these bases continued to support
HKUST’s strategic plans for synergistic development and
mutually beneficial engagement.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Joint research between the Division of Environment and
South China University of Technology saw the successful
completion of an air pollution study of the Pearl River Delta
(PRD). The projection, funded by the Fu Tak Iam Foundation,
included application of an updated regional air quality
modeling system to provide better air quality simulation over
Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta after taking advantage
of recently available emission inventory data from the Hong
Kong and Mainland governments.
The modeling team of the Division of Environment also
collaborated with Peking University to develop a real-time
air quality forecasting system for Shenzhen Environmental
Protection Bureau.
PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS
During the year, relationships between HKUST and Mainland
institutions continued to grow through University association
membership, the signing of agreements on co-operative
arrangements for training and research, and departmental
collaborations.
HKUST joined the Association of Sino-Russian Technical
Universities, which comprises 15 Mainland universities and
15 universities from Russia. It aims to foster technological
and economic advancement, technical education and to
nurture scientific talents in China and Russia.
The School of Business and Management entered a
Strategic Partnership Framework Agreement with Tsinghua
University’s School of Economics and Management to
further co-operation between the two business schools and
establish a Business and Management Research Institute.
Two institutes were set up under arrangements agreed with
the School of Humanities and Social Science. The School
signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Shanghai
Jiaotong University’s School of Liberal Arts to establish the
SJTU Institute on the History and Society of Northeast China.
The PKU-HKUST-UVA Joint Institute was also established by
HKUST, Peking University and the University of Virginia to
offer joint training and research programs.
In addition, the Department of Chemistry signed
agreements with Xiamen University and Fuzhou University
respectively on joint training of postdoctoral researchers in
chemical sciences.
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics
Management (IELM) hosted the First Forum for the Council
of Industrial Engineering Department Heads in Greater
China. The meeting brought together 40 department heads
from Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong to promote
the development of industrial engineering and related
areas in Greater China and to strengthen exchange among
industrial engineering departments in the region. IELM Head
Prof Fugee Tsung was elected Founding President of the
Council.
MAINLAND DELEGATIONS AND STUDENTS
HKUST is a popular study destination for Greater China
students. University statistics show that the number of
degree-seeking undergraduate students from Mainland
China, Taiwan and Macau grew to 172 in 2010 from 151
in 2009, an increase of 13.9 per cent. At the postgraduate
level there were 1,450 Mainland students enrolled, 796
undertaking research and 654 on taught programs. With
