I
t has been a busy year for the Interdisciplinary Programs
Office (IPO), with several exciting developments in its
undergraduate provision. In September 2010, the Division of
Environment under IPO launched Hong Kong’s first integrated
BSc in Environmental Management and Technology, specifically
designed for students who want to develop the technological
and management skills to play a leadership role in creating a
green corporate world.
This innovative program, together with the IPO’s established
BEng & BBA Dual Degree Program in Technology and
Management and BSc in Risk Management and Business
Intelligence, offer high-flying cross-disciplinary education
to top-notch students. The IPO approach seeks not only to
build knowledge but character and soft skills through a wide
range of enrichment activities, including external student
competitions, project work and student exchanges.
During the year, student-centered learning and international
experience were two areas of special focus. The IPO
successfully attracted students from leading high schools
around the world, including Korean Minjok Leadership
Academy in Korea, while international applications grew by
150 per cent. Meanwhile, the global footprint of the IPO
expanded further with student interns in the US, Switzerland
and the Mainland, graduates studying MPhil and PhD
programs in the US, UK and Switzerland, and alumni with
work experience in UK, Switzerland, Singapore, Australia,
Shanghai and the Mainland.

Dual Degree students also made good use of the
opportunity to discover more about the environmental
challenges the world faces, as well as different cultural
perspectives, at the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit
and Technology and Management International Business
Plan Competition in Brazil. Highlights included learning
about the latest practices in sustainable development,
working in teams with elite students from the University
of Illinois and the University of Sao Paulo on green
business proposals for the competition, cultural visits
and a discussion with Hong Kong’s Secretary for the
Environment, Mr Edward Yau.
In 2010-2011, the IPO continued to advance the design
of its four-year curriculum to be introduced in 2012. The
student-centered curriculum aims to help learners take
initiatives to build knowledge.
The Division of Environment, in collaboration with the
HKSAR government, has played a major role in bringing
air quality research to the next level. With a HK$9
million Special Equipment Grant from the University
Grants Committee and a HK$6 million grant from the
Environmental Conservation Fund, the Division launched
the first Air Quality Research Supersite in May 2011,
which enables real-time characterization of ambient
particulate matter in the air to strengthen understanding
of the nature and sources of fine particles.
During the year, discussions and preparatory work for the
consolidation of the structure of Biomedical Engineering
were in full swing, leading to the establishment of the
Division of Biomedical Engineering in July 2011. The
Division will promote faculty collaboration in teaching
and research in the fast-growing field, research initiatives
in partnership with industry, and develop internship
projects. Research will focus on computational biomedical
engineering; biomaterials, biosensing and bioelectronics;
and biosystems design and engineering.
Projects are expected to lead to commercially viable
applications with positive impact for the community.
The Division will host the bioengineering postgraduate
program, and work closely with the Schools of Science
and Engineering to support the development of a set of
biomedical foundation courses to enhance undergraduate
programs in biotechnology and bioengineering.
