orking alongside the community has always been
a part of the HKUST outlook as it seeks to fulfill its
mission to assist in the economic and social development
of Hong Kong. During 2010-2011, faculty and students
continued to utilize their expertise and skill sets to engage
with government, industry, business, and the society at
large. The goal is to advance people’s lives and foster
the collaborative spirit between the University and
different sectors of the community, and to build strong
ties with alumni.
PRESERVING AND SPARKING CREATIVITY
The University’s South China Research Center won an
open competitive bid for a commission of more than
$1 million to carry out the Territory-wide Survey of
Intangible Cultural Heritage in Hong Kong for the Leisure
and Cultural Services Department.
On another exciting note, Y K Pao Distinguished Visiting
Professor and international composer Prof Bright Sheng
brought to Hong Kong a novel series of chamber music
workshops.
The Intimacy of Creativity – The Bright Sheng
Partnership: Composers Meet Performers in Hong Kong
featured musicians and new global stars of composition
who performed their pieces in workshops open to HKUST
students and the public. The series brought new insight
into how music is created and created a stimulating setting
to spark new ideas among participants and audience alike.
The event culminated in two world premiere concerts at
the Academy for Performing Arts, held in collaboration
with media partner Radio Television Hong Kong. Activities
were also broadcast on radio and television.
BUILDING THE ECONOMY ON
INNOVATION
In August 2010, the HKUST Innovation Forum Seminar
Series was launched to create a platform for industry,
government and academia to exchange information
about the latest innovation trends and how contributions
can be made to economic development both inside Hong
Kong and beyond. At the inaugural seminar, speakers
Dr Martha G Russell, Associate Director of Media X at
Stanford University and Dr Neil Rubens, Assistant Professor
at the University of Electro-Communications, Japan,
applied social network analysis to socially constructed data
to study inter-organizational systems of innovation and
their value-add supply chains. After the successful launch
of the first forum, the second one was held in Taipei in
partnership with 21st Century Foundation on 28 June
2011 and the third one will be held on 16 September
2011 jointly with Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly.
Prof Yan Xu, Department of Information Systems,
Business Statistics and Operations Management, led
a Central Policy Unit project on “The Cooperation of
Hong Kong, Mainland and Taiwan in High Technology
Industry, and the Agenda of High Technology Industry
Policy in Hong Kong”. The study proposed an approach
to re-define the technology and innovation industry,
and made recommendations on government policies to
facilitate Hong Kong’s technology and innovation industry,
including schemes to encourage knowledge transfer from
universities to industry. Prof Xu also received an invitation
from Stanford University to give a keynote speech on the
project at the Innovation Ecosystems Summit in July 2011.
A HKUST research team led by Prof Erik Baark, Division
of Social Science, submitted a report to the HKSAR
Government’s Innovation and Technology Commission
entitled “Consultancy Study to Develop a Framework to
Assess the Economic Impact of Research and Innovation
Activities in Hong Kong”. The report summarized
the landscape of Hong Kong’s innovation system and
presented an analytical framework to assess the economic
impact of the system’s research, development and
innovation activity.
FUELLING THE YOUNGER GENERATION
During the year, HKUST academics and students continued
to share their knowledge with school students and other
educators.
The Hong Kong team of the 42nd International Physics
Olympiad proudly brought home three gold and two silver
medals from Thailand. Students of the award-winning
team were trainees of the Physics Enhancement Program
under the HKUST’s Department of Physics.
