held in China in April 2011. The Association promotes
cooperation between its members in education, research,
and enterprise in order to contribute to Pacific Rim
development.
The School of Engineering was invited to become a
founding member of the Asia-Oceania Top University
League on Engineering (AOTULE), a strategic alliance of
11 leading engineering universities in the Asia-Pacific
region. HKUST received “The Excellent Promotion of
Exchange Student Programs” award from AOTULE
in 2010 for active contribution to the organization’s
activities.
DRAWING THE WORLD TO HONG KONG
International conferences that bring together researchers
from other institutions and countries are extremely
useful in helping scholars to stay on top of the latest
developments in their fields and develop new research
leads and collaborations. Over the year, HKUST
continued to show its ability to draw and organize
significant conferences and symposia in Hong Kong.

The William Mong Seminar Series on Nano
Science and Technology, which was organized by a
committee chaired by Prof Ping Sheng, Department
of Physics, involved 12 senior researchers, their
post-doctoral research associates and postgraduate
students from leading universities across Asia.

HKUST joined together with the Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Hong Kong
Applied Science and Technology Research Institute
(ASTRI) to launch the first IEEE Technology Time
Machine Symposium in June. The high-powered
event looked at potentially high impact emerging
technologies, their current maturity, and scenarios
for the future. Radio access technology, biomedical
sciences, human-centric intelligent societies and
organic electronic materials were among the topics
discussed, with “Global R&D Leaders” being another
key theme. Among those officiating at the opening
ceremony was Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Mr
John Chun-wah Tsang. The general co-chair of the
organizing committee was Dean of Engineering Prof
Khaled Ben Letaief. The Symposium brought 200
experts from around the world to Hong Kong.
