In January 2011, over 120 delegates attended the
Second POMS-HK International Conference. The
successful two-day event was organized by the
Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics
Management, the HKUST Logistics and Supply Chain
Management Institute, and the Production and
Operations Management Society (POMS) — Hong
Kong Chapter. It focused on “POM in the Economic
Recovery”.
As active members of the wider education sector in
Hong Kong, members of the University also played a
prominent role in major events. At the “Going Global
Conference” in Hong Kong, a major annual international
education conference for over 1,000 academic policy-
makers and industry leaders sponsored by the British
Council, President Tony F Chan as Convener of the Heads
of Universities Committee joined regional representatives
from around the world in addressing the audience at the
opening plenary on “World Education: the New Global
Powerhouse?”. Prof Edmond Ko, Adjunct Professor and
Senior Advisor to the Provost at HKUST, also spoke in a
break-out session on the relative merits of three-year and
four-year degree programs.
CAMPUS INTERNATIONALIZATION AND
STUDENT EXCHANGE
HKUST has been stepping up its recruitment and raising
its profile overseas to attract talented young people from
around the world to bring diversity to the campus. The
number of non-local degree-seeking undergraduate
students admitted in 2010 rises to 302 from 242 in 2009,
an increase of 24.8 per cent. Among the 302 non-local
students, 171 are from Mainland, Taiwan, and Macau,
and 131 from the rest of the world.

HKUST emphasizes student exchange which nurtures
students’ cultural awareness and international experience.
HKUST runs one of the largest exchange programs in
Hong Kong and received a commendation from the 2010
UGC Quality Assurance Council’s Audit Panel for “the
scale and management of the student international
exchange programme”.
The extensive geographical reach of our exchange
program enables HKUST students to make links around
the world. In 2010, the number of students spending
a term studying with one of the University’s 150-plus
exchange partners increased to 737, which represented
38 per cent of the undergraduate class and an 11.7 per
cent increase on the previous year. Multiculturalism on
campus was also boosted as the number of students who
exchanged in from partner institutions increased to 548
from 535 in 2009, which represented growth of 2.4 per
cent.
HKUST students gained further international exposure
and wider networks through competing in a variety of
challenging contests around the world. Among their
achievements during the year, HKUST students won gold
at the 2010 International Genetically Engineered Machine
Competition (iGEM) at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT); a HKUST robotics team received the
Design Elegance Award for their vehicle in the 2011
International Student Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)
Competition, held at NASA Johnson Space Center in
Houston; a team of HKUST MBA students gained the
first runner-up prize in the RSM Private Equity Case
Competition in The Netherlands; and a group of HKUST
MBA students became one of only six global teams to be
represented at the prestigious Hult Global Case Challenge
final in New York City.
