The School is rapidly moving forward with its education
of 21st century engineers as it looks forward to the four-
year undergraduate degree system in 2012. Incorporating
the “Engineering Plus” education concept, the reinvented
engineering curriculum provide ample room and flexibility
for students to take minor programs and second majors.
They will also enjoy greater opportunities to acquire
global experience, engage in whole-person development
activities and other co-curricular programs according to
their interests and career aspirations. Plans to opening a
Research Option in all engineering majors are underway
so that students who are keen on research will receive
greater exposure to scholarly activities.
The new curriculum takes a more student-centric
approach and provides a broader and more flexible
program structure. Students will be exposed to
engineering fundamentals in the first year of study along
with professional counseling and advice to help them
identify their own interests and academic strengths before
they decide on their majors.
During the year, the School continued to further extend
its undergraduate exchange partnerships and has now
established agreements with a total of 77 partners
worldwide over 18 countries and regions. These include
an agreement on a summer research undergraduate
exchange partnership with Princeton University, making
HKUST the first University in Asia to enter into such a
partnership with Princeton in engineering.
The Center for Engineering Education Innovation (E
2
I)
was established in Fall 2010 to assist capacity building
in students and faculty members and to position the
School as a leader in engineering education and faculty
development. Under the directorship of Prof Edmond Ko,
the Center has put the initial focus on helping people in
transition, introducing a peer mentoring program for first-
year students and offering courses on teaching for new
faculty members in collaboration with the University’s
Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching.
HKUST has also become one of 35 educational institutions
across 11 countries to be selected by Hewlett Packard
to participate in the HP Catalyst Initiative. The global
program is designed to develop more effective approaches
to worldwide education in information age fields,

林斯頓大學協議合辦夏季研究本科生交換計劃,令科大成為
亞洲首間在工程範疇與普林斯頓大學達成合作協議的大學。
學院的工程教育創新中心(

I
)於
2010
年秋季成立,協助提
升學生和教學人員的實力,鞏固和加強工程教育及教學人員
的發展。在高彥鳴教授的領導下,中心初步的重點工作是協
助新近加入科大的師生適應環境,包括為一年級學生設立朋
輩導師計劃,以及與科大的教學促進中心合作,為新入職的
教員提供教學課程。
科大同時獲惠普挑選參與惠普催化劑倡議聯盟計劃,成為全
球

個國家

間獲選學府之一。這個全球性計劃的宗旨是
發展更適合資訊時代的工程教學、及更有效的教學模式。科
大參與由卡內基美隆大學領導的評估學習聯盟,與其他學府
合作以
15
萬美元撥款成立新的教學實驗室,為計算機科學
及工程學系的學生提供先進的電腦設備。
科大工學院再次成為香港博士研究生獎學金計劃得主的首選
學府。自計劃於兩年前推出以來,科大工學院一直是全港大
學之中,最受博士生歡迎的工學院。
為表揚科大教研人員和博士生的卓越成就與科研工作,學院
於
2011
年推出首屆卓越研究獎,獎項包括為教研人員而設
的傑出卓越研究獎、卓越研究獎及優秀年青研究獎,以及為
畢業生而設的博士生卓越研究獎。

月,科大宣佈第
一屆四名得獎教研人員名單,並於

月宣布得獎的博士生
名單。
工學院經過一年諮詢、以及在未來研究工作小組上討論,於
2011
年
5
月成立能源研究所。研究所獲科大策略性跨學科研
究金資助,並得到學院內資深能源教研人員的支持,憑著卓
越的研究能力與綜合領導推廣跨學科合作,為可持續發展技
術、能源效益及電子節能三大範疇研究引進資金。
年內,學院繼續擴展環球網絡,達成多項創新的合作協
議,包括與韓國浦項科技大學合辦博士課程,以及與
École
Supérieure d’Électricité
合辦新的雙碩士學位課程。科大亦與
韓國家庭電子產品公司
Woongjin Coway
簽訂協議。

including engineering. The University will collaborate with
other partners as part of the new Measuring Learning
Consortium, led by Carnegie Mellon University. HKUST
will use its US$150,000 grant to establish a new teaching
laboratory with high-end computers for Computer Science
and Engineering students.
The School proved to be the first choice again in Hong
Kong for high-caliber engineering students admitted
under the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. The School
has attracted the largest number of PhD students among
all local engineering schools since the scheme started two
years ago.
To recognize the achievements of our faculty and PhD
students as well as to provide a tribute to the world-class
work carried out at HKUST, the School offered its first
research excellence awards in 2011. The accolades are
the Distinguished Research Excellence Award, Research
Excellence Award and The Young Investigator Research
Award for faculty members, and PhD Research Excellence
Award for graduate students. The four inaugural faculty
awardees were announced in May 2011, with PhD
student winners to be named in November 2011.
In another exciting move, the School established an
Energy Institute in May 2011, financially supported by the
University’s Special Research Fund Initiative. The Energy
Institute is the outcome of a year-long consultation process
and discussions in forums organized by the School’s Future
Research Task Force. Building on the School’s faculty
members who are active in energy research, the Institute
aims to establish a critical mass of research capabilities
to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and provide an
umbrella organization to attract major funding in three
focused areas: sustainable technology, energy efficiency
and conservation in electronics.
In 2010-2011, the School extended its global reach, with
a number of collaborative agreements on innovative
provision, including a joint PhD program with Pohang
University of Science and Technology, Korea, and a new
dual Master’s degree program with École Supérieure
d’Électricité. An agreement with Woongjin Coway, a
Korean household electronics company, has also been
signed.
