School of Science
Physical Review B
Diverse learning experiences, including lectures,
laboratory courses, capstone projects, signature courses
and language courses especially designed for science
students’ needs are integrated into the new curricula to
ensure students obtain a solid foundation and adequate
exposure to a range of science disciplines. The School
has put enormous efforts and resources into designing
its laboratory and signature courses to build students’
competency in experimental methods and logical analysis,
which are the two major pillars of the scientific method.
During the year, the Division of Life Science designed four
new majors while the Department of Mathematics refined
its programs into six tracks of study for the four-year
curriculum. These modifications provide greater academic
flexibility by allowing students to take different study plans
according to their career aspirations.
In accordance with the Common Core program for the
four-year degree programs, the School has successfully
migrated eight general education courses to the Science
and Technology area. The School has proposed 21
courses for inclusion in the Common Core, which aim
to provide students with broad general knowledge and
raise awareness of scientific concepts embedded in daily
activities. They also include interest and leisure topics.
The School is also keen to provide postgraduate students
with exposure and hands-on training in innovative,
cutting-edge technologies. This is assisted by the many
internationally recognized research activities at the School,
which continue to push the boundaries of innovation.
Successes are largely due to the dedicated efforts of the
School’s highly accomplished faculty members, whose
achievements have been recognized with numerous
prestigious honors, including research fellowships, election
to top national academies, and leading awards. In 2010-
2011, HKUST was ranked third in the world for the
impact factor of papers published in
Physical Review B
,
a prominent journal in condensed matter and materials
physics.
Fostering a broader view is an important School
goal. During the year, the School continued to add
to its academic and student exchange partners, with
agreements established with Tsinghua University in
Taiwan and Columbia University. Students also had the
opportunity to participate in different service learning
opportunities in Mainland China and Cambodia. They
also added to their perspective on issues closer to home
through the Knowledge Without Borders Seminar Series.
First started by the School in 2009, the talks feature
guest speakers and topics related to culture, politics,
and environmental issues, among others, to widen their
perspectives.
