Undergraduate education
E
ducating the next generation of community leaders is part of HKUST’s core mission. Each year,
HKUST graduates more than 2,000 young people from over 40 undergraduate programs. These
dynamic bachelor degrees have been carefully designed to provide a holistic experience that can
realize each student’s potential and achieve learning outcomes that can ensure graduates’ success
in their careers and personal lives.
Class sizes are small and delivered by a highly qualified international team of faculty members.
HKUST’s facilities are also excellent, including a world-class library, IT facilities and laboratories, all
located within a beautiful campus setting. An important part of the student experience at HKUST is
an active and internationalized campus life and the University continues to make strides toward the
diversification of the student body.
TRANSFORMING THE UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCE
Hong Kong’s education reform will reach a critical point in September 2012, when the first
class of secondary school students graduates with the new Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary
Education (HKDSE). In that year, HKUST will accept entrants with both the HKDSE and the final
class graduating with HKALE results, an event often referred to as the “double cohort”. The year
thus proved a busy and productive 12 months as preparations continued to meet the challenge of
the double cohort but also to optimize the tremendous opportunity to enhance degree programs,
which will move from three to four years.
In early 2011, the University submitted its Academic Development Proposals (ADP) to the University
Grants Committee (UGC) setting out detailed plans for the period 2012-2015. The UGC welcomed
these proposals and assigned additional student numbers to HKUST, noting that the University
has reached a positive stage of change and development. In the ADP, the basic intentions for the
HKUST undergraduate experience were clearly defined. HKUST’s objective is to provide:
•
Flexible degree programs that expose students to multiple
cross-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary perspectives
•
A broad-based University Common Core, opening students’
horizons and strengthening critical thinking
•
Inquiry-based learning and undergraduate research
opportunities to stimulate creativity and curiosity based on
HKUST’s internationally recognized research strength
•
Meaningful co-curricular activities to cultivate global citizenship,
provide practical experiences, enhance creativity and foster
social responsibility.
Over the year, both three-year degree programs and the new four-
year degree curriculum took steps forward. New interdisciplinary
majors, minors and cross-School programs have been introduced.
During 2010-2011, plans for the Division of Biomedical Engineering
were successfully advanced, leading to the new academic unit
being established under the Interdisciplinary Programs Office in
July 2011. The move provides a further platform to bring together
the strengths of HKUST’s Schools to develop new interdisciplinary
programs and courses.

質素。
2011
•
靈活的學位課程,以提升多學科及跨學科的體驗;
•
大學核心課程內容廣泛,開拓學生視野及提高其獨立
思考能力;
•
憑藉廣獲國際認同的研究實力,充份利用科大研究優
