Teaching and Learning
Graduate Studies is responsible for the enhancement of
postgraduate education and training and linking this to
the University’s strategic development.
STUDENT LIFE
HKUST focuses on creating an all-round education for
students, encouraging them to make good use of the
many learning opportunities outside the classroom that
the University offers. These range from specific student
development programs to opportunities to run and
participate in one of HKUST’s many sports clubs, or join
one of the thriving student hall communities based on
various interests and hobbies.
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
The President’s 1-HKUST Student Life Award
The launch of the President’s 1-HKUST Student Life
Award in January 2011 has been encouraging students
to initiate campus-wide projects that can enhance the
sense of community at HKUST. There were five events
under this scheme:
•
The March in March hiking event, to encourage
fitness and connections with the natural world and
other members of HKUST
•
UST Great Minds – 10 Star Professors – 10 Minutes
Each, featuring faculty members from across the
University each discussing one big idea they are
passionate about
•
Organic Fun Day @ HKUST, with family activities and
games for the HKUST community
•
The HKUST Talent Contest, providing a platform for
performances from a multinational group of students
•
Another student project “HKUST Without Boundary”
aims to enhance connection between local, Mainland
and international students with a photo competition,
game activities and food gatherings.
REDbird
REDbird, the personal development award scheme
sponsored by the Drs Richard Charles and Esther
Yewpick Lee Charitable Foundation, continued to attract
a substantial response with over 250 students joining
the program as members and 40 as coaches. REDbird
centers on training and out-of-classroom experiences
that challenge students and prepare them to become
contributing members of society.
HKUST Connect
Building on the University’s efforts to raise civic
awareness, develop sustainable partnerships with the
wider community, deepen student learning and promote
a more humane world, HKUST Connect links members of
the University to those outside through service projects
and learning. Showing the University community’s
willingness to participate in such an initiative, HKUST
Connect attracted over 1,300 participants who were
engaged in 86 service projects, accumulating close to
10,800 service hours in 2010-2011, double the figures
recorded in the previous year. 11 service learning trips,
mostly initiated by students, engaged over 200 students.
Involvement ranged from one-off community service
opportunities to longer-term projects.
Living Learning Communities
The Living Learning Communities, based in the Chan
Sui Kau and Chan Lam Moon Chun Hall (Undergraduate
Hall VII) and facilitated by the Residence Master, faculty
and staff, successfully fostered interaction and enhanced
intellectual and personal growth among the hall’s 356
residents. The eight themes were Arts a-LIVE, Creative
Affinity, Fitness Connection, iVillage, Live Green, Rise
and Shine, Service Learning and Leadership, and Wall to
Wall. Other students also benefited through attending
the open activities of the communities. The program will
be extended to Undergraduate Hall VI, and around 100
more students, in the next academic year.
Further individual development initiatives have been
planned during 2010-2011 for launch in the following
year, including First Year Success @ HKUST which is
designed to help new students adapt to campus life,
find useful resources, engage with the University, develop
a sense of purpose and integrate into the HKUST
community.
HEALTHY LIVING
To support students’ academic success and personal
growth during their time at the University, activities were
organized to promote mental health awareness and
well-being as an integral part of student life. This year’s
Healthy Living Festival focused on “Love is All Around”
and “Something about Happiness”, organized by the
Student Affairs Office’s Counseling and Development
Team. The festival included workshops, exhibitions and
sharing sessions and over 600 students and colleagues
participated. Among the activities, several role models
were invited to share their reflections and experiences in
