SCHOOL-BASED ADMISSION
Preparations for School-based admission, which
builds on the experience of the School of Business
and Management and more recently the School of
Engineering, also moved ahead. Under the four-
year system, all undergraduates will be admitted to a
School, rather than a program. This provides students
with an opportunity to make a delayed choice in their
specialization and gain the foundation necessary to
study across a number of disciplines.
UNIVERSITY COMMON CORE
A major change in the four-year degree is that all
students will take courses under the University Common
Core rather than the current School-based general
education model. The objective of the Common
Core is to assist personal development by broadening
general knowledge and intellectual qualities, increasing
appreciation of culture and boosting awareness of basic
human values. It spans a broad range of courses under
the categories of Arts and Humanities, Social Analysis,
Science and Technology, Quantitative Reasoning and
English and Chinese Communication and covers the
equivalent of one full year of study. Each area will have a
prescribed credit requirement. There will also be a non-
credit Healthy Lifestyle program.
The Common Core has already been implemented for
three-year degree students through the migration of
existing general education courses and development
of a large number of new courses. During 2010-2011,
work also progressed well on 15 signature Common
Core courses sponsored by different Schools. These
integrate disciplines and transcend traditional subject
area boundaries and will be piloted in the next academic
year.
A number of practicum arts courses were piloted in
2010-2011, receiving a warm welcome from students
and attracting over 200 enrollments for the seven
courses. Significant redevelopment and extension
of HKUST’s English language program has also been
ongoing, with fully revised Year 1 courses to enhance
students’ English language proficiency implemented
for three-year degree students. Four-year students will
complete a total of 12 credits in English language and a
further three credits in Chinese Communication.
In addition, about 180 existing general education
courses have been undergoing review to become
Common Core courses. Over 250 courses will be
available for students to choose from in 2012.
The vision behind these moves is to realize the 1-HKUST
goal of educating students to become responsible,
informed citizens, helping to build their community.
STUDENT EXCHANGE
The University believes exchange programs have an
essential role in its student experience. The programs
enable students to study and live outside Hong Kong for
one or more semesters and bring their peers from across
the world to HKUST. Such programs widen horizons
and understanding, foster independence and new
friendships, and bring new awareness of different ways
of life. In line with this, HKUST has taken a leadership
role in developing an extensive network of national
and global partners. By 2010-2011, more than 150
partnerships with universities and institutions globally
had been arranged, with 38 per cent of undergraduate
students at HKUST participating in these life-changing
opportunities for development.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
PROGRAM
The popular Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Program (UROP) creates a wide range of opportunities
for students to experience research under the
supervision of HKUST’s world-class professors. It saw
more than 20 per cent of faculty lead research projects
involving close to 250 students in 2010-2011. The rapid
growth in participation reflects the HKUST community’s
shared aspiration to integrate academic research and
undergraduate teaching. It also demonstrates the
additional value that a leading research University can
provide in the educational experience its students receive.
In addition, undergraduate research was the focus of
the University’s fourth teaching and learning symposium
organized by the Center for Enhanced Learning and
Teaching. Over 75 faculty participants joined this
successful and highly interactive symposium and 50 per
cent of the attendees were from sister institutions.

大學核心課程

代現行以學院為本的通識教育模式。核心課程的目的,是促進學生的個人發
展,包括豐富學生基本常識和學術素養、提升文化欣賞能力,並加強對人類
核心價值的認識。課程類別廣泛,包括藝術及人文科學、社會分析、科學與
科技、計量推理及中英傳意等,所修的學分相等於一個學年的時間,每個範
圍均有學分規定。此外,學生必須修讀不計學分的健康生活模式課程。
科大已透過轉移現有的通識教育課程及開辦大量新課程,落實三年制課程下
的核心課程。年內,由不同學院開辦

個具代表性的品牌課程進展理想,
課程融合不同學科領域,超越了傳統科目的界限,將於下一學年首辦。
科大於

年首辦多個實踐藝術課程,深受學生歡迎,七個課程共吸

多名學生報讀。科大同時大幅度重編和擴大英語課程的內容,經全面
修訂的一年級英語課程有助提升學生的英語能力,並已在三年制學位課程學
生之中推行。四年制學生將完成共

個學分的英語課程,以及另外

的中文傳意課程。
此外,科大致力檢討約

學生交換計劃
科大深信國際學生交換計劃是學習體驗的重要一環,讓學生可以在香港以外
學習和生活一個學期或以上,同時讓世界各地的學生前來科大進修。計劃有
助擴闊學生的視野和識見、培養獨立能力和建立社交網絡,並認識不同的生
活方式。因此,科大特地發展廣泛的國家及環球夥伴網絡。截至
2010-2011
年,科大已與全球超過

所大學及機構建立了夥伴關係,多達
