facing adversity to help students learn about strategies
for building healthy relationships, managing stress and
emotions, and maintaining a healthy study-life balance.
SPORTS
An active atmosphere on campus is one of HKUST’s
major characteristics, with superb sports facilities
available. In September 2010, enthusiasm for exercise
reached a new peak when a record 385 runners from
17 departments joined the Campus Run, a 50 per
cent increase on the previous year. In May 2011, the
campus was buzzing again with the 1st HKUST PACER
Challenge. PACER stands for Progressive Aerobic
Capacity Endurance Run, a 20-meter shuttle run test
for estimating fitness levels, organized by the Physical
Fitness Association of Hong Kong, China. Over 100
people participated as organizers, participants, judges
and helpers.
Leading events arranged by the Sports Association
included the Intramural Sports Competitions, the
Athletics Meet and the Aquatic Meet. In April 2011,
the Association also led a delegation of over 100 HKUST
sports people to Macau for the HKUST-UM Sports
Challenge Cup, an annual event jointly organized by
students of the two universities.
ARTS AND CULTURE
Another important aspect of life at HKUST is to involve
the University community in artistic and cultural pursuits
and give its science, engineering and business students
the opportunity to learn to appreciate the valuable role of
the arts in people’s lives.
One major annual event is the HKUST Arts Festival, which is
held in March and April. The theme for 2011 was Film Art,
with seminars, talks, a film poster exhibition and screenings
included in the event line-up.
As part of the festival and HKUST’s 20th Anniversary
celebrations, the Center for the Arts organized a guest talk
with Dr Simon Kwan, the architect of the HKUST campus. Dr
Kwan discussed the planning and design of the University’s
outstanding look and feel, providing an enlightening event
for students and the public.
Musical activities saw the University Choir give its sixteenth
annual performance at City Hall Concert Hall in March with
a concert dedicated to “On stage: Dream and Imagery”.
The same month, the University Philharmonic Orchestra
staged its fifth annual concert.
In addition, musical theater performers and stage
production wizards from the University community had
the chance to join HKUST’s third annual Broadway summer
musical. Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida” involved over 100
students and alumni, with rehearsals starting in June 2011
and the show successfully performed the following month.
PREPARING FOR THE WORLD OF WORK
The Career Center continued to provide students with
programs, courses and events to assist their future plans.
More than 11,000 students attended 166 recruitment talks
and four job fairs. Some 44 companies participated in the
fairs. A surge of recruitment interest was noted from firms
based in Mainland China, Singapore, Japan, Korea and the
Middle East.
The Internship Learning Scheme offered structured pre-
internship training and summer internship placements to
some 210 undergraduate students in Hong Kong, Beijing,
Shanghai, New York, Washington DC and San Francisco.
The On-campus Internship Program saw 17 HKUST
departments/offices hiring 85 student interns, providing
students with on-campus work experience and feedback
from supervisors.
More than 3,500 students participated in 134 career
development programs. In addition, the Career Building
Course, a one-credit general education elective for
undergraduates and postgraduates, attracted 178 students
and received excellent feedback.

科大藝術中心邀請設計科大校園的建築師關善明博士主持
講座，作為科大藝術節和科大
