HKUST celebrates 20 years of education and research excellence

Alumni Gatherings
Over 42,000 alumni around the world are growing from
strength to strength, with their ties further tightened
through a number of reunions held in Hong Kong,
Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Singapore, London,
Switzerland, Boston, Los Angeles, New York and San
Francisco. Both President Tony F Chan and Vice-President
for Institutional Advancement Dr Eden Y Woon joined
most of the reunions and kept our alumni on track of
the latest developments of their Alma Mater.
Academic insights
China Economic Forum
This dynamic forum exemplified how HKUST has
nurtured great minds and the flow of knowledge.
The four eminent speakers, who shared their insights on
the Chinese economy and the issues it faces, had all been
or currently are HKUST faculty members. Now playing
important roles in the development of the Mainland and
Hong Kong economies, these leading figures —

42,000
名校友遍布世界各地，於香港、北京、上海、深
圳、新加坡、倫敦、瑞士、波士頓、洛杉磯、紐約及三藩
市舉行聚會以加強聯繫。陳校長及副校長翁以登博士出席
了大部分聚會，並向校友介紹母校最新的大學拓展情況。
學術活動
中國經濟論壇
論壇見證科大培育優秀人才，和促進知識交流。四位著名
講者均是科大前任或現任教授，分別是世界銀行高級副
行長兼首席經濟學家林毅夫教授、清華大學中國與世界經
濟研究中心主任李稻葵教授、中國人民銀行副行長及國家
外匯管理局局長易綱教授，以及財經事務及庫務局局長
陳家強教授。他們在中港經濟發展舉足輕重，與出席的逾
400
名商界和學術界領袖、學生及公眾人士分享寶貴意見。
傑出學人講座
多位國際領袖應邀發表演講。微軟公司全球資深副總裁、
微軟亞太研發集團主席兼科大高等研究院訪問教授張亞勤
博士以「
New Wave of Computing
」為題發表演講；諾貝爾
物理學獎得主大衛．格羅斯教授就「基礎物理學的前沿」發
表演講。普林斯頓大學工程及應用科學學院院長暨

教授
Vincent Poor
教授蒞臨科大傑出學人講
座，以
“Information and Inference in the Wireless Physical
Layer”
為主題主講。
宇宙學學術會議
來自全球各地的粒子理論及宇宙學翹楚共聚一堂參加為期
三天的會議，討論以宇宙膨脹及其謎題的最新科學發展，
包括膨脹宇宙學、弦理論、暗物質等理論。科大致力站在
科技發展的最前線，創建平台匯聚知名學者，共同面對環
球挑戰。
科技政策論壇
論壇以「香港與珠三角洲的創新
•
未來」為題，匯聚國際學
界、企業及政府專家一同探討香港創新科技的發展路向和
前景。
Prof Justin Lin, Senior Vice President and Chief
Economist of the World Bank; Prof David Li, Director
of the Center for China in the World Economy of the
Tsinghua University; Prof Yi Gang, Deputy Governor of
the People’s Bank of China and Administrator of the
State Administration of Foreign Exchange; and Prof K C
Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury,
HKSAR Government — discussed their views with
over 400 attendees, including business and academic
decision-makers, students and members of the public.
Distinguished Lectures
Global leaders spoke at HKUST during our 20th
Anniversary. Dr Ya-Qin Zhang, Corporate Vice-President
of Microsoft Corp, Chairman of Microsoft Asia-Pacific
R&D and Visiting Member of the Institute for Advanced
Study at HKUST gave a distinguished lecture on
“New Wave of Computing”. Prof David Gross, Director of
the Kavli institute for Theoretical Physics of the University
of California at Santa Barbara and Nobel Laureate in
Physics, gave a lecture on “The Frontiers of Fundamental
Physics”. Prof H Vincent Poor, Michael Henry Strater
University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Dean of
the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Princeton
University, gave a lecture on “Information and Inference
in the Wireless Physical Layer”.
Cosmology since Einstein Conference
The three-day conference held at HKUST brought together
leaders in particle theory and cosmology from around
the world. Discussion focused on the latest scientific
developments on the expanding universe and its puzzles,
including the inflationary universe, string theory and dark
matter. The event illustrated how HKUST positions itself
at the forefront of scientific and technological advances
and creates a platform for gathering leading academics to
work on global challenges in these areas.
HKUST Science and Technology Forum
Leading experts from academia, industry and government
gathered to discuss the way forward at the Forum on The
Forum on “Innovation for the Future of Hong Kong and
the Pearl River Delta”.
