OUR MIRACLE CONTINUES
HKUST celebrates 20 years of education and research excellence
15
Global vision
Presidents Dialogue
The celebrations included visits from distinguished leaders
of internationally renowned institutions and major academic
figures who engaged in thought-provoking discussions at
HKUST. President Tony F Chan hosted separate dialogues
with Prof Jean-Lou Chameau, President of Caltech, and
Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Cambridge, on the challenges that globalization presents
for higher education. Prof Christopher Pissarides, London
School of Economics and Political Science and Nobel
Laureate in Economic Sciences, spoke on equilibrium in the
labor market at the UC Rusal President’s Forum.
Engagement with Global Leaders
The University’s international reputation and reach, built
up over the past two decades of continuous interaction
and contribution, saw it receive over 100 congratulatory
messages from global leaders of universities, institutes,
governments, businesses and industries for its 20th
Anniversary.
Outreach
The University continues to strengthen connections overseas
as President Tony F Chan visited leaders of prestigious
universities around the world and hosted reunions with
HKUST’s alumni abroad. The University has stepped up its
efforts to reach out to international media as its faculty
members continue to demonstrate their teaching and
research capabilities at overseas conferences and through
published articles on authoritative academic journals.
Serving the community
HKUST Service Learning Day
Over a weekend in April, students, faculty, alumni and
staff spread out across the community to participate in a
variety of service opportunities and pave the way for more
University-community engagement in the future. A total
of 700 members of the University took part in 35 service
projects, mobilizing the entire HKUST population in this
significant and positive venture.
Einstein in Hong Kong
Taking science and technology into the community and
raising awareness of its importance in our everyday lives
has been another significant focus of the celebratory
program. To promote the culture of science in the society,
HKUST co-organized Einstein in Hong Kong, a leading
public exhibition introducing the contributions and great
ideas of the top-notch scientist who shaped world history.
This was accompanied by science talks, workshops, and a
Letters to Einstein writing competition for secondary
school students.
The Intimacy of Creativity — The Bright
Sheng Partnership
To encourage and explore the process of creativity, the 20th
Anniversary presented a first-of-its-kind series of music
workshops and concerts in Hong Kong, with rehearsals
open to students and members of the community.
“Composers Meet Performers in Hong Kong” brought
together professional musicians and emerging composers
under the guidance of internationally renowned composer
and musician Prof Bright Sheng to showcase the creative
process of a new work. The series helped to uncover some
of the mysteries of music and inspire innovative thinking
among those attending.
Artistic Talents at HKUST
The HKUST community also demonstrated its own diverse
capabilities go beyond science and technology. The
HKUST Summer Musical led to the Hong Kong premiere
of Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida”, an artistic endeavor
reaffirming the University’s emphasis on an all-round
educational experience. The University Philharmonic
Orchestra, organized by student volunteers and including
exchange students, graduates, postgraduate researchers,
combined their 5th Anniversary Concert with HKUST’s
20th Anniversary celebrations. Embedding the University’s
community presence further, the musical shows and
concert both took place off campus.
Exhibition
The HKUST 20th Anniversary Exhibition — Our Miracle
Continues: A Visual Presentation was presented at HKUST’s
library to give visitors an overview of the University’s
milestones in the past two decades.
Into the future
The 20th Anniversary has thus been a time for reflection,
joy and for harnessing the University’s collective strengths
to move toward new frontiers. Events have taken a variety
of forms to enable the University to highlight the different
roles it plays and to recognize the people who enable
HKUST to drive for excellence and show its caring spirit.
With activities continuing into the next reporting year,
many more celebrations are yet to come as the University
raises the profile of its creative endeavors and strides into
the future where Our Miracle is set to continue.
口號及標誌
The slogan and logo
The story of HKUST has frequently been described as miraculous. With this in mind, the
Organizing Committee decided to make “Our Miracle Continues” the theme of its celebratory
slogan. In doing so, the slogan captured the University’s legendary success as well as its determination to keep on
advancing in the future.
The 20th Anniversary logo encompassed the University’s name in English and Chinese and its iconic Sundial, also known
as the “Redbird”, which greets all visitors to HKUST at the main entrance and projects our soaring energy and vibrant
environment. The wavy silhouette of the ribbons and its delicate movements indicated the festive nature of the year.
