2010, providing one-time seed funding for strategic team-
based and interdisciplinary research. Some 40 proposals
have come in under four categories: Energy, Life Science
and Health-Related, Sustainable Development for Hong
Kong and Frontier Research. They all bear our signature
interdisciplinary approach. Total allocations will exceed
$36 million. Independent reviews are carried out by a star-
studded panel consisting of Nobel laureates and eminent,
visiting IAS scholars.
The reputation of a university rests on the quality of its
students and faculty. In both areas, we try hard to ensure
the caliber of our intake. In faculty recruitment, we are
going global, as we always have. To date, 35 new faculty
members from top universities have come on board.
We are still trawling for more. Talent-scouting is one
reason among many why the Vice-President for
Institutional Advancement and I went to the East Coast
of the US in May this year, visiting 10 universities in three
cities, getting to know more about their leaders and their
graduates.
In student recruitment, our rising international rankings
are like a magnet, attracting high-caliber students from
near and far. This year our non-local intake hits 18 per
cent, the highest in local higher education. This number is
significant and it is almost evenly split between Mainland
and overseas students.
A good university is a global university, and we are global
not only in our student body and faculty composition,
but also in global outreach. This year, we put out our
welcome mat for the Vice Chancellor of Cambridge
and the Presidents of Caltech and Chicago as well as
the Deans from MIT among others. The national and
international media representatives also came calling for
a familiarization visit. Our global partnerships continue to
sprout in leading universities. To name just one, we recently
established a Joint Undergraduate Research Exchange
Program for Engineering Students between HKUST and
Princeton University.
Any talk of global outreach is incomplete without a
reference to our Mainland strategy. We have a good
start in the Pearl River Delta with our HKUST Fok Ying
Tung Graduate School in Nansha, now in talks with the
Guangzhou Government for wide-ranging collaborations.
In Shenzhen our IER building has been completed in

January this year. Further north, the Zhejiang Advanced
Manufacturing Institute of HKUST offers a platform for
research, innovation and technology transfer, as well as
training for local entrepreneurs. The 21st century is said
to be China’s century, and we are ready, willing and able
to be part of it.
Young as we are, we now have the beginnings of a global
alumni network in some 40 locations throughout the
world, with over 300 hosts providing much-appreciated
relocation services to our graduates. I was glad to meet
our graduates at seven overseas alumni gatherings in
the first half of this year, from Shenzhen to Shanghai,
Singapore to Switzerland, and London to Los Angeles,
not to mention Boston and New York. More are planned
for the future.
After two decades, we are ready for own ethos to evolve.
Hence the “1-HKUST” concept, which in essence means
that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Among
students, the newly launched “President’s 1-HKUST
Student Life Award” initiative sponsors student-organized
activities that showcase their multiple talents and draw
together the multiple segments of the campus community.
The Schools, energized by a new spirit, are working
together to advance our mission. This concept also feeds
research into education even at the undergraduate level.
As part of our 20th Anniversary celebrations, a group of
100 students from various disciplines came together to
produce in just six weeks two sold-out performances of
Elton John and Tim Rice’s “AIDA”, a Broadway musical.
They are emblematic of what our students are capable of,
telling the world that, culturally, this young university
has arrived.
In just 20 years, we have raised the research culture in
our city, and roused our community’s interest in our
economic transformation through science and technology.
A weightier mission awaits us, as our nation embarks on
its path to a technological future. The plan is fixed,
the path is clear, and the hour is set. We are ready for
our destiny.
