EXTENDING INTERNATIONALIZATION

University’s internationalization endeavors target
thought leadership, strategic partnerships, academic
and research collaborations, and international
exchange, among others. During the year, the
University has continued to step up expansion of its
global network.
Thought Leadership
In September 2013, the University held its second
specifically named HKUST IdeasLab session at the
Annual Meeting of New Champions of the World
Economic Forum in Dalian, also known as the “Summer
Davos”. The IdeasLab featured an expert team from
the University, led by the President. Discussion focused
on brain research and aging issues with other global
specialists. In January 2014, President Chan joined
the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2014 in
Davos, Switzerland, and engaged in discussions with
global political, business and education leaders. He also
participated in the Global University Leaders Forum
with over 20 presidents from top universities, including
Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, University of California, Berkeley,
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
(KAIST) and National University of Singapore, sharing
insights on trends in global higher education, science,
technology and innovation.
The P r e s i dent wa s i nv i t ed to S aud i A r ab i a’s
International Exhibition and Conference on Higher
Education as both the keynote speaker and a panelist
on innovation in higher education. He also addressed
the academic community at Princeton University, and
gave speeches at the Times Higher Education World
Academic Summit. The University’s senior management
were invited to speak at the Entrepreneurial University
Leaders Programme, jointly developed by the United
Kingdom’s National Council for Entrepreneurship in
Education, Oxford University and Universities UK.
