series with Oxford University focused on “Visions of the
City”. The event attracted high-profile speakers from
business, government and academia, with an address
by Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Mr CY Leung. The first
program in the joint series was held later that month.
The HKUST Institute of Emerging Market Studies also
co-organized a number of high-profile meetings. These
included a forum on China’s urbanization strategy
and a major conference with the World Bank on
the challenges of population aging in Asia, drawing
researchers from around the region, government
officials and business strategists.
GENERATING INSIGHT INTO SCIENCE
AND TECHNOLOGY
To increase interaction with the younger generation,
students from the School of Science joined the British
Council’s Science Alive 2014 to conduct workshops
and activities demonstrating different scientific areas.
In addition,
Science Focus
, the magazine designed and
written by HKUST students, was founded in 2014 to
arouse the interest of Hong Kong secondary school
students in science and scientific research. The first
issue was published in February and received very
positive feedback from the schools.
In the School of Engineering, the Center for Global &
Community Engagement successfully built a cooperative
plat form for student s and facult y, communit y
organizations and corporate partners to exchange ideas
and share experience on how engineering can help
in community. The Center linked up with numerous
organizations, including the Ebenezer School, Raleigh
Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf,
Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong, Engineers without
Borders (Hong Kong) and the Hong Kong Institution
of Engineers. Robotics in the community for visually-
impaired children, a speech recognition training kit app
for hearing-impaired children, the Android Application
Design Contest and Toy Design Competition, were
among the activities contributing to interaction
between the School and community.
SHARING EXPERTISE ON BUSINESS AND
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
The School of Business and Management invited
local and international business leaders to share
their experiences with students, and also evolved its
own endeavors to take its work into the community.
Activities included the popular Business Insights
faculty seminars, where academics discussed their
latest research. In 2013-14, invitations were extended
to external speakers, such as Hong Kong Monetary
Authority representatives, to present additional views.
Twenty-five seminars were organized by the Division
of Social Science to discuss issues of the day while the
Division of Humanities continued its long-running series
of lectures co-organized with the Hong Kong Museum
of History, holding 23 talks during the year.
