ENHANCING TEACHING PERFORMANCE

Broader criteria for faculty performance have been

introduced in recognition of the different roles in

education, research and knowledge transfer that

academics need to play in a leading research university.

To boost faculty members’ understanding of the world

of patents and intellectual property (IP) and encourage

knowledge generation and transfer, two campus-

wide seminars were organized during the year to equip

faculty, students and staff with more IP management

knowledge and skills. In total, over 200 participants

          attended the seminars.

At the Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching,

which partners departments, faculty and other teaching

staff in advancing professional development and active

learning pedagogies, a series of seminars by Center

staff and outside speakers continued to inform faculty

          on the latest developments.

The Center for Engineering Education Innovation

forum for engineering faculty to exchange views on

topics related to engineering learning and teaching. In

          addition, representatives from E

          the United States.

As one of Asia’s first universities to launch MOOCs,

HKUST saw the potential of this new teaching method

and explores strategy, effectiveness and quality of

programs, with its multimedia team and designated

            ACADEMIC ACCOLADES

In 2013 -14, facult y member s continued to be

recognized for their research endeavors and impact on

academia and society by some of the highest national

          and international honors.

Nationally, Prof Jianshu Li (Mathematics) was elected to

the Chinese Academy of Sciences, for his world-class

studies on Lie Group Representations and Automorphic

Forms. He is the first Hong Kong-based scholar to join

the Academy’s Division of Mathematics and Physics

          and HKUST’s sixth Academy member.

Two of the University’s faculty and their research teams

received 2013 State Natural Science Award (Second

Class) for their pioneering work. Prof Tianshou Zhao

(Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) was awarded

for his breakthroughs on Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells

(DAFC). This was the second year in a row that Prof

Zhao received this award, one of the most prestigious
