FOSTERING UNDERSTANDING
The “Science-for-Lunch” talk series, one of the
signature programs initiated by the University Council’s
Institutional Advancement and Outreach Committee,
was organized for the third year, with sponsorship from
Chevalier Group and Café Deco Group. Eight HKUST
professors spoke to business and community leaders
about their research discoveries and innovations related
to social media, Alzheimer’s disease, biofuel cells and
5G wireless technologies, among others.
The Committee also initiated the HKUST Leadership
Talk series, whereby senior University management
share their vision and plans with University Council and
Court members. Prof James Lee, Dean of Humanities
and Social Science, and Prof Khaled Ben Letaief, Dean
of Engineering, gave presentations in March and June
2014 respectively, with further talks planned.
DONATIONS TO BUILD THE FUTURE
The University received a major gift of $20 million
from the Li Ka Shing Foundation to nurture students’
gl obal v isi on through internati onal res earch,
entrepreneurship, community engagement, and
other development activities.
Three new Named Professorships were established,
namely, Elman Family Professorship in Business,
donated by Mr Richard Samuel Elman, Michael Jebsen
Professorship in Business, given by Jebsen Educational
Foundation, and Sin Wai Kin Professorship in Chinese
Culture, donated by Sin Wai Kin Foundation Ltd.
Further donations supported the University’s frontier
research in a range of areas: The Ark Power System
Development Co Limited for fuel cells; Daijiang
Innovations Technology Co Ltd – a spin-off company
of HKUST alumnus Mr Frank Wang and faculty
member Prof Zexiang Li – for electronics and computer
engineering; and an anonymous donor for business
data analysis.
Several contributions were also received for education
and student development. The Bai Xian Education
Foundation Limited and Bai Xian Asia Institute Limited
established the Asian Future Leaders Scholarship
Program to promote cross-cultural understanding
amongst young Asians. HKUST was one of the six
anchor universities. HK JEBN Limited, a company
founded by HKUST alumnus Mr Kent Hau, pledged
an annual scholarship for PhD students who are
researching health and quality living. The estate of
the late Prof Edmond Ko, who headed the School
of Engineering’s Center for Engineering Education
Innovation, set up a scholarship on peer mentoring,
while a donation from Mrs Choi Ma Oi Kuen supported
a public service leadership program.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
