2013-2014 HKUST ANNUAL REPORT - page 57

ALUMNI IN ACTION
The University was also encouraged by support for the
Alumni Endowment Fund (AEF). In 2013-14, a great
number of our graduates contributed to the Fund,
including donations from alumni Mr Samson Yu and
brothers Mr Terry and Terence Tsang. This giving spirit
brought the fund (including government matching
grants) to $15 million in total. Investment return of
over $500,000 was put toward different enrichment
initiatives to benefit a broad range of students.
The HKUST Convocation continued to strengthen
bonds between the University’s key stakeholders
through the Academic Affairs Committee, Student
Affairs Committee and University Development
Committee. The launch of regular lunch gatherings
with both local and non-local students has added to
effective communication.
The HKUST Alumni Association (also known as A1)
put its vision of “Alumni Inspire Alumni” into action,
engaging alumni of diverse backgrounds through
its three-pillar platform of alumni engagement,
community service and entrepreneurship. A wide
variety of programs was organized and received great
support. The past year also witnessed significant
growth in membership. Two more alumni groups
were established: the Environmental Management and
Technology Alumni Association; and Risk Management
and Business Intelligence Alumni Association. In
addition, alumni chapters were set up in Shanghai,
Guangzhou, and Atlanta in the United States.
Memorable homecoming reunions for the Class of 2003
and Class of 1994 were held in celebration of their 10th
and 20th graduation anniversaries respectively. Further
reunions took place in the United States, South America,
Europe, Asia and Mainland China, with President Chan
and Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Dr
Eden Y Woon participating in many of them.
During the year, numerous alumni received awards in
recognition of their contributions and achievements.
