Partnerships for Collaborations
To build international partnerships, President Chan led
a delegation to Latin America to visit presidents and
senior management of 12 leading universities in Brazil,
Chile and Argentina. Other destinations included six
top science and technology institutions. Among them
were CIATEC, known as the Silicon Valley of Brazil,
and the first-rate aeronautics cluster of Technological
Institute of Aeronautics and its affiliate, Embraer, the
world’s third largest commercial jet manufacturer. The
trip also saw senior management host seminars at the
higher education institutions, media interviews with the
President, and gatherings with alumni.
In addition to Latin America, senior management visited
more than 30 other institutions around the world,
ranging from Imperial College London and University
of California, Los Angeles, to Technion Guangdong
Institute of Technology.
The Targeted Strategic Partnerships give rise to 36
joint workshops at HKUST and partner universities,
more than 70 faculty and student visits, as well as joint
research papers and successful grant applications with
the National Science Foundation of China and Research
Grants Council of Hong Kong.
Global Exchange
HKUST was the sole university in Hong Kong invited to
participate in “Study in France” Virtual Education Fair
in November 2013. The event was presented by the
Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau
to promote student mobility and information exchange
among higher institutions in Hong Kong and France.
The University was again the only local university to
join Infiniti Performance Engineering Academy’s global
talent search, organized by Infiniti Motor Company in
October 2013 to boost internship opportunities and
career advancement for elite engineering students.
Students continued to benefit from the University’s
global network of 250 universities and institutions
through academic and research exchange as well
as internships at first-class institutions such as the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the
European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
The University entered into agreements with leading
global universities and enterprises, including Harvard
University, the National University of Singapore, Seoul
National University, the University of Copenhagen,
Leiden University College The Hague, the University
of Minnesota, the University of Warwick, and Infiniti
Motor Company Limited.
