          successfully applied to be a Guangdong Province
        
        
          Innovative R&D Team, a notable provincial-level
        
        
          scheme for talented researchers focusing on high-end

          The School engaged in knowledge exchange through
        
        
          offering professional training to local government
        
        
          officials and entrepreneurs to encourage an innovative
        
        
          and global mindset. More training programs are
        
        
          planned.
        
        
          With the new campus building due to be in place by
        
        
          the end of 2014, the School will also be well positioned
        
        
          to capture further opportunities that are emerging
        
        
          in Nansha, which has seen rapid socio-economic
        
        
          development since its designation as a National Special
        
        
          Zone in 2012.
        
        
          Institute, Foshan LED-FPD Technology R&D Center,
        
        
          Zhejiang Advance Manufac turing Institute and
        
        
          Guangzhou HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute.
        
        
          In March 2014, the University signed a framework
        
        
          agreement to establish a Guangdong-Hong Kong
        
        
          innovation and technology transfer platform with
        
        
          the Guangzhou government. The milestone move
        
        
          will greatly strengthen the School’s role in fostering
        
        
          commercialization and technology innovation between
        
        
          Hong Kong and Nansha, as well as other cities
        
        
          in the Pearl River Delta.
        
        
          A series of joint laboratories and applied engineering
        
        
          centers have been set up by the School’s four divisions
        
        
          with renowned overseas universities and major local
        
        
          companies. Partners include China Telecom Beijing
        
        
          Research Institute, the University of Bayreuth (Germany),
        
        
          Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and the
        
        
          University of Waterloo (Canada) and Midea Electric
        
        
          Appliances. These collaborations not only boost the
        
        
          research capability of the divisions, but also inspire
        
        
          more joint activities, making the School a valuable
        
        
          platform for HKUST faculty and students to collaborate
