Professor V Chigrinov
collaborates with Dainippon Ink and
Chemical (DIC) Japan to develop a plastic color-twisted
nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) using a photo-
alignment method with a continuous roll-to-roll process.
Azodye materials will be soon transferred from DIC research
to the production division.

Professor H S Kwok
and his research team
have achieved the fastest nematic LCD using
a new nanoalignment layer and invented
several new bistable display modes. CONA
Electronics has begun mass production of the
patented product. Dai-Nippon Ink has begun
sample production of the photo-alignment
materials.

In 2005-06 alone:
•
Technology Transfer Center evaluated 48 invention disclosures from
HKUST researchers
•
TTC arranged for the filing of 77 patent applications, including full
and provisional applications with the US Patent Office, CIP, and
international filings
•
HKUST received notification of the granting of nine patents
•
RDC signed 115 R&D contracts with industrial clients, worth more
than $33.5 million
