KUST is distinct among tertiary institutions in Hong Kong,
and indeed most of Asia, by being specifically tasked under
the Laws of Hong Kong to go beyond the traditional areas
of teaching and academic research in order to assist in the social and
economic development of Hong Kong. This element of our mission
has been a key factor in shaping the University’s development.
Within a short time span, HKUST has earned a reputation as a leading
international research university on the strength of our many research
and innovative technological breakthroughs. The University has played,
and will continue to play, a leadership role in the transformation of
Hong Kong into a knowledge-based society. We are helped along by
our collaborations and partnerships with industry in new and emerging
fields. At the same time, the university nurtures young entrepreneurs in
start-up companies.
The Five High-Impact Areas
A key HKUST strategy is to concentrate on selected research fields,
chosen for their high impact on the local community and the University’s
vision as a world-class leader in these targeted fields.
In our Strategic Plan, five high-impact areas have been identified and
targeted for the University’s pursuit of academic world leadership:

比全港以至大部分亞洲地區的大專院
校，科大獨特之處，是香港法律明確
賦予其突破傳統教研領域，促進香港
社會與經濟發展的使命。這項特殊使命，是規劃
科大發展的重要元素。
科大創校時間雖短，但憑藉多項在研究及創新科
技上的突破，聲譽鵲起，成為國際著名的研究大
學。在香港轉化為知識型社會的過程中，科大一
直擔當領導角色，加上與嶄新及新興行業的合作
及夥伴關係，今後定當奮力維持這領導地位。
同時，科大成立的新公司，亦培育了不少年青企
業家。
五個重點研究領域
科大歷來的重點發展策略，集中在幾個既定的
研究領域，這些領域對香港社會的發展有重大
影響，亦是科大致力成為世界級學術領袖的攻
關項目。
為了達致目標，科大在策略發展計劃中，定出五

管理教育及研究
學術工作、研究與發展及其應用，
是科大的核心使命。我們申請研究資助局的
角逐研究用途補助金計劃的成功率，
十四年來，連續名列全港第一。
Scholarship, research and development and
their application are central to the HKUST mission.
For 14 years running, we have achieved the Number 1
success rate in Hong Kong in the Research Grants Council’s
Competitive Earmark Research Grants program.
