H
KUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School (FYTGS) is an
important platform for the University to participate
in the Mainland’s research programs and to collaborate
with sister institutions and industry partners.
A major milestone was established when the construction
of the FYTGS Building in Nansha commenced in June
2010. It is expected to be completed in 2012.
Since its inception, the School has secured more than
50 projects, including the prestigious 973, 863, NSFC
and vital state-level projects approved by the Ministry
of Science and Technology of China. The School has
19 invention patents, one design patent and three
copyrights under its belt. HKUST will directly take part
in the Mainland’s prestigious research schemes through
FYTGS.
The School’s Digital Life Research Center has been
granted the status of Guangzhou Digital Life Engineering
Technology Research Center by the Guangzhou Science
and Technology Bureau in recognition of its research
prowess and potential. It will be a key innovation
center to enhance collaborations among institutes and
enterprises to promote knowledge and technology
transfer.
HKUST’s FYTGS strategy is in line with China’s Reform
and Development Plan of Pearl River Delta (2008-
2020) and the Framework Agreement of Collaboration

between Guangdong Province and Hong Kong, both
specifically naming Nansha as the city targeted for major
development in technology and innovation, and in
education and training. The Nansha Government signed
a Framework Agreement with FYTGS in June 2009 to
facilitate cooperation and collaboration in those sectors.
FYTGS admits MPhil students in Computer Science
and Technology, Advanced Materials, and Atmospheric
Modeling. These programs are unique as they provide
students with an interdisciplinary education which is not
commonly available in Hong Kong. It also offers students
hands-on research experience on the Mainland as they
work directly on research grants and projects.
The School is also working with Mainland universities
such as the South China University of Technology
(SCUT) and the Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) to
develop postgraduate programs on the Mainland. These
programs combine the unique strengths of respective
partner-universities to deliver innovative course content
which is of high relevance and value to students and
their prospective employers.
The School has 10 research centers in the areas of
Information and Communications Technology, Advanced
Materials, Environment and Sustainable Development,
and Biomedical and Biotechnology. More than 40 faculty
members from the Hong Kong campus take active roles
as leaders or participants in the research projects.
