Commercialization and Business
Development
HKUST strives to make a contribution to economic
development in Hong Kong and the region by nurturing
talent, by technology diffusion and transfer processes,
by intellectual property protection and licensing, and by
the incubation of start-up companies.
Nurturing talent is considered the most effective means
of technology diffusion. Most of the 1,364 master’s and
146 doctoral graduates of 2009 moved into the private
and public sectors, taking with them in-depth knowledge
of their discipline, and an ability to create and innovate.
These graduates, and indeed those at the bachelor’s level,
are a force for change, and play a significant role in our
transition to a knowledge-based society.
HKUST has been allocated $575.5 million by the
Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) over the 10-
year period 1999-2009 (i.e. since the beginning
of the ITF program) - far more than any other
institution in Hong Kong.
Over this same period, HKUST received $577.8
million in industrial funding for contract research and
collaborative R&D.
The University’s Technology Transfer Center (TTC) and
HKUST R and D Corporation Ltd (RDC) work to establish
university-industry collaboration, R&D partnerships, the
protection and licensing of intellectual property and
assisting spin-off companies. Examples include:
The HKUST LED-FPD Technology R&D Center at
Foshan was formally established in June 2010. The
Center, with funding support from the Foshan
Government, will strengthen the University’s research
infrastructure and activities in the Pearl River Delta
region and provide a platform to secure collaboration
opportunities and funding sources on the Mainland.
Prof Karl Tsim, Department of Biology, developed a
hair-based drug testing technology as an alternative
to other drug testing methods such as the urine
drug test commonly used in Hong Kong. The High
Performance Liquid Chromatograph-Chip-Mass
Spectrometry, a new technology, can trace a person’s
drug-taking history over the previous three months
or more –detailing what drugs have been taken,
when, and the actual dosage.
HKUST signed an agreement on 8 December
2009 with GlaxoSmithKline R&D China (GSK R&D
China), a subsidiary of GSK which is the world’s
second largest pharmaceutical company, to conduct
collaborative research at the newly established
GSK R&D China - HKUST Neuroscience Laboratory.
This partnership is unique as it brings together
the pharmaceutical expertise in industry and the
biological expertise within academia to address an
important and challenging area of neuroscience. This
partnership is expected to lay the foundations for
initiatives in neuro-drug development and boost drug
development in Hong Kong.
Prof Reinhard Renneberg, Department of Chemistry,
has established a start-up company R&C Biogenius
Limited which filed a patent entitled Lipocalin-2
as a Prognostic and Diagnostic Marker for Heart
and Stroke Risks (WO/2009/132510) in 2009.
Another start-up company he has established, DNA
SuperNova Limited, is currently collaborating with
Merck & Co., Inc. to develop a rapid test for detection
of Campylobacter Jejuni which is the main cause
of bacterial food-borne disease in many developed
countries. He has also collaborated with Shenzhen
Kang Sheng Bao Biotechnology Co., Limited to
develop a CardioCare hs-CRP ELISA with CE and
SFDA approvals, an InfectCheck CRP ELISA with
CE mark and an InfectCheck NeoPT rapid test with
CE mark. In addition, he has collaborated with GC
Corporation in Japan to develop a rapid test for
detection of Streptococcus Sobrinus in saliva, which
can be used to predict the risk of dental caries.
Perception Digital, founded in 1999 by Prof Jack Lau,
Prof CY Tsui and Prof Roger Cheng, was listed on the
Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) in December 2009
to raise approximately HK$100 million in capital.
