學院提供啟發思維的學習環境，增進學生對自然世界的認識，培育他們獨
立思考的能力並激發創意。
社會瞬息萬變，理學院與時並進，於本年度推出了多項計劃。
理學院的前生物化學系與生物學系於2010年7月1日重整為生命科學部，以期將
生命科學教研提升至更高水平。該學部有兩個分支，分別為生物化學與細胞生物
學、及海洋生態學與生物工程。
為配合四年制本科生課程，學院重新設計課程內容及教學活動，並投放大量資源
設計實驗課程，務求提高學生進行實驗及邏輯分析的能力，這是科學教育的兩大
支柱。自2012年起，實驗課程的數目將不斷增加。學院已向政府申請資金，擴
充實驗室設施，以提供足夠的實驗室空間。在新課程下，學生將接受範圍更廣泛
的知識、以知識為本的教育，在選擇學科上亦有更大的靈活性。
科大多位教研人員取得傑出成就，屢獲殊榮，其中唐本忠教授獲選為中國科學院
院士，葉玉如教授則獲委任為科大分子神經科學國家重點實驗室創辦主任。該實
驗室得到中國科學技術部核准；葉教授並當選全球兩大神經科學及精神藥理學組
織 — 國際神經精神藥理學協會及美國神經科學學會的理事會成員。
科大與全球第二大藥廠葛蘭素史克屬下葛蘭素史克中國研發中心簽署協議，在
「葛蘭素史克中國研發中心 — 香港科技大學神經科學實驗室」開展合作研究，為
產學合作奠定重要的里程碑。

he School of Science offers an intellectually stimulating
environment for scientific inquiries aiming to provide
a fundamental understanding of the natural world and
to nurture students to become independent and original
thinkers.
In response to the needs of a rapidly changing world, the
School introduced a number of initiatives during the year.
A new Division of Life Science was established under the
School of Science on 1 July 2010 through the integration
of the former Departments of Biochemistry and Biology
— to raise life science teaching and research to a higher
level of excellence. The Division comprises two sections:
Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and Marine Ecology and
Biotechnology.
In order to ready itself for the four-year undergraduate
program, the School has re-designed the program
curriculum and classroom teaching activities. It has
also put enormous effort and resources into designing
experiment courses with an aim to boosting students’
competency in experimentation and logical analysis,
which are the two major pillars of scientific method.
To provide sufficient laboratory space for an increasing
number of experiment courses in 2012, the School has
applied for government funding to expand its laboratory
infrastructure. Under the new curriculum, students will
receive a broader knowledge-based education and enjoy
greater flexibility in the selection of study plans to fulfill
their aspirations.
Faculty members have garnered various awards for
their outstanding achievements. Among them were
Prof Benzhong Tang who was elected an Academician
of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof Nancy
Ip who was appointed Founding Director of HKUST’s
State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience
approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology
of China. Prof Ip was also elected Councilor of two of
the world’s leading organizations for neuroscience and
psychopharmacology — Collegium Internationale Neuro-
Psychopharmacologicumand the Society of Neuroscience.
A milestone in industry-academia partnership was
established as the University signed an agreement with
GlaxoSmithKline R&D China, a subsidiary of GSK, the
world’s second largest pharmaceutical company, to
conduct collaborative research at the GSK R&D China —
HKUST Neuroscience Laboratory.
