Quacquarelli Symonds(QS)
Quacquarelli Symonds(THE-QS)
R
anked among the best engineering schools in the
world, the School raised its regional profile further
in May 2010 with the release of the Quacquarelli
Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings, which saw
HKUST secure seventh place among Asian universities
in IT and engineering. In 2009, when the rankings were
first established, the University was the only Hong Kong
institution listed in the top 10 in these fields.
Globally, HKUST ranked number 26 worldwide for
Engineering and Information Technology in the Times
Higher Education﹣Quacquarelli Symonds (THE-QS) World
University Rankings in 2009. It has been consistently
ranked among the top 30 in the world since 2004.
The School has introduced a range of initiatives to
set the stage for the new four-year undergraduate
curriculum which will be launched in 2012. It has
incorporated the School-based Admission (SBA) Scheme
into its admission options since the 2009 intake,
providing both the conventional “program-based” and
the new “school-based” options for students. With the
launch of the new curriculum in 2012, all students will be
admitted through the SBA Scheme.
The new curriculum is more student-focused and
provides a broader and more flexible program structure
to give students an all-round educational experience to
better prepare them for careers in engineering. With
the new curriculum, it is expected that the School can
produce globally-competitive professionals who are

multi-dimensional and who are equipped with strong
problem-solving and communication skills.
To enhance the breadth and depth of the undergraduate
curriculum, an enterprising new minor program in
engineering management and law was launched in
2010. The core courses of the program cover the legal
perspective on engineering practices and operations,
intellectual property law in engineering, project
investment strategies and cost control, and engineering
management.
To better position itself as a leader in engineering
education and faculty development, the School of
Engineering has established a Center for Engineering
Education Innovation and has appointed Prof Edmond
Ko as the Founding Director. The Center is dedicated to
the building of human capacity by encouraging students
and faculty members to be champions of developmental
issues that are important to them. With the initial
focus on helping people in transition, the Center has
introduced a peer mentoring program for first-year
students and collaborated with the Center for Enhanced
Learning and Teaching to offer a course on teaching for
new faculty members.
The School seeks to be a global research powerhouse
that makes significant impact. According to the Research
Grants Council’s Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme,
the School has attracted the largest number of PhD
students among local engineering schools.
