Alumni
Shortly after President Tony F Chan began his presidency
at HKUST in September 2009, he took every opportunity
to meet with HKUST alumni. He was impressed by the
career achievements of many of our young graduates
and their contributions to society. In addition to joining
local alumni reunions, President Chan met alumni on the
Mainland and in the United States.
Apart from making pledges and donations, many of our
alumni have returned to help our students. In addition to
acting as their mentors, many have shared their life and
career experiences by speaking to classes of students.
With over 37,000 alumni residing in all corners of
the world, the Alumni Relations Team adopts an
e-communication strategy to foster closer relationship
with the community. The number of reachable
ema i l cont ac t s has reached 80% of the tot a l
alumni population. With personalized and targeted
communication channels which are effective and
eco-friendly, alumni are kept informed of the latest
developments at the University.
Alumni organizations are some of the vital channels
through which the University maintains close contacts
with its graduates. The HKUST Alumni Association
and all alumni associations and groups have rendered
continuous support.
Six new alumni associations have been established: they
are the Master of Science in Telecommunication Alumni
Association, the Master of Science in Engineering
Enterprise Management Alumni Association, the Civil
and Environmental Engineering Postgraduates and
Scholars Association, HKUST Alumni Toastmasters Club
and Alumni Tennis Club.
Community Projects
HKUST has been encouraging students to take part in
community projects to enhance societal involvement
and to give back to society. The School of Business and
Management introduced the Social Responsibilities
Project in 2007, which was later adopted by the
University in 2009 to launch HKUST Connect. HKUST
students from all schools were encouraged to apply their
academic knowledge to contribute to society through
participating, planning and executing service projects. A
one-credit Service Learning Practicum was offered to help
students implement their projects with guidance from
faculty members.
Over 200 students have joined the REDbird Award
Program aimed at fostering responsible citizenship by
encouraging them to become members or coaches. The
HKUST-Hang Seng Bank Green Ambassador Program has
cultivated students’ concern for sustainability.
Electronic and Computer Engineering undergraduates
have made use of their engineering expertise to help the
needy by designing rehabilitation tools for the elderly
and the visually impaired. Led by Prof Tim Woo, the
students have taken part in design competitions with
innovative designs such as an easy-to-use and affordable
Braille printer and devices which helped enhance the
elderly’s cognitive power. They brought home an array
of awards including the Gold Award in the Amway
Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project, and
championships in the categories of Elderly Support
Devices and Better Life, and Innovative Designs in the
Hong Kong Youth Technology Design Competition.
