GLOBAL NETWORK
on an exchange for at least one semester. Every semester
we play host to over 300 exchange students from around
the world who foster a cosmopolitan air on campus. For
instance, the School of Engineering has established close
to 70 partnerships with institutions from 18 countries.
These include Cornell and Purdue Universities, UC
Berkeley, University College London, the Universities of
Bristol and Toronto, ETH Zurich, the Technical University
of Munich, Kyoto University, the National University of
Singapore and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science
and Technology (KAIST). The Business School has 108
partner schools for international exchange.
For postgraduate studies, 11 senior year PhD students,
supported by the University’s Overseas Research Awards
have visited a renowned research laboratory for up to
six months. These universities included Cambridge, Yale,
Northwestern and Michigan. This helped students gain a
global view both professionally and personally.
A number of collaborative agreements have been signed
recently by the School of Engineering. Among them
was an agreement on a Joint PhD program with KAIST
(Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology),
a top research university in Korea. An agreement on a
Dual Master’s Degree Program with Telecom SudParis
in France, and the Academic, Scientific and Cultural
Co-operation Agreement with Sharif University of
Technology in Iran, were signed.
Collaborative agreements were also signed with overseas
institutions by the School of Science during the 2009-10
academic year. They provided more choices for Science
students to experience a semester studying abroad. The
institutions included Monash University in Australia,
the University of Virginia in the USA, Rutgers, The
State University of New Jersey in the USA, and Sabanci
University in Turkey.
Global Collaboration
HKUST has over the years established exchange and
research collaborations with hundreds of overseas
universities, research laboratories and organizations.
President Tony F Chan has become Chairman of the
Association of East Asian Universities Association
(AEARU), a regional alliance with 17 research universities
as members, for a term of two years. AEARU aims
at establishing a forum for the presidents of leading
research-oriented universities in East Asia to foster
exchange and cooperation between the major
universities in the region.
On the research front, the University will spearhead
the Hong Kong team to take part in the largest ever
International Cancer Genome Consortium, which will
decode genomes from 25,000 cancer samples related to
50 types and subtypes of cancer.
With an objective to further expand our international
network and sustain visibility, the School of Engineering
plans to form a global alliance with internationally
recognized institutions in Asia Pacific and the Middle
East for collaboration. In the past year, the School
has visited many top institutions in Malaysia, Egypt,
Iran, Turkey, India, Russia and South Korea. It has also
initiated cooperation with a number of overseas partners
through undergraduate and postgraduate exchange,
student internship and joint research postgraduate
programs. Meanwhile, the Business School co-organized
the 7th annual Citi International Case Competition. A
record 21 teams from 10 countries participated.
The University has entered into a joint education and
research project with UC RUSAL, the world’s largest
aluminum producer, to strengthen research and
education ties between Russia and Hong Kong. This
has further enhanced the efforts to internationalize
education and intensify research globally.
HKUST has attracted visitors from academia as well
as other sectors and governments from around the
world.
