InterACT
Universität Karlsruhe
Carnegie Mellon University
RESEARCH CENTERS AND INSTITUTES
HKUST believes interdisciplinary research centers and institutes
have a central role to play in establishing a critical mass of research
capabilities in areas of high importance to Hong Kong’s economy.
They also attract funding, increase the University’s visibility and boost
interaction with business, Government and industry.
We have continued to encourage their creation as new fields of
specialization evolve and economic and social concerns develop. Our
research efforts continued to pick up pace at:
An HK$400 million R&D center, the Nano and Advanced Materials
Institute Ltd (NAMI), was established to expand the scope of the
University’s nanomaterials and nanotechnology activities and
leverage HKUST’s expertise in leading research and development
of new technologies in Hong Kong.
The Logistics and Supply Chain Management Institute, set up to
coordinate research, education and industrial cooperation efforts
to help Hong Kong retain its competitive edge. An HK$400
million R&D Center for Logistics and Supply Chain Management
Enabling Technologies is also at work, co-hosted by HKUST, the
Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong
Kong. Its initial focus is on Radio Frequency Identification.
The newly-created Institute for the Environment, set up in
response to mounting local and global concerns about sustainable
development, also pegged as an area of high impact in the
University’s Strategic Plan. As an interdisciplinary think tank, it acts
as a focal point for university-wide work on the environment
and a point of contact for outside environment groups and
research organizations.
Other institutes include the Advanced Manufacturing Institute, the
Biotechnology Research Institute, the Hong Kong Telecom Institute
of Information Technology, the Institute of Integrated Microsystems,
the Institute of Nano Science & Technology, and the Sino Software
Research Institute.
The School of Engineering is also host to The International Center for
Advanced Computing and Communication Technology (InterACT),
a significant new research and education center that will stimulate
discoveries and develop the next generation of computer and
communications innovators and engineers. Formed with Universität
Karlsruhe and Carnegie Mellon University, it is the result of the first
collaborative agreement by HKUST involving three universities from
different continents.
