T
he past year has seen further impressive support for HKUST through generous
donations that underline the community’s role as a pillar in our development.
At the same time, stronger connections have been forged with those who know
HKUST’s strengths best: our 30,000 alumni.
The year’s primary donation came from Dr Lee Shau Kee who pledged HK$400
million through the Lee Shau Kee Foundation to mark his support for the University’s
development as a global leader in education and research.
The University will show its gratitude by naming its new campus, the Lee Shau Kee
Campus and a building contained there housing the Business School and other
academic units, the Lee Shau Kee Business Building. Dr Lee will also be honored as a
Founding Patron of the Institute for Advanced Study.
Another generous gift was the $100 million donation by The Hong Kong Jockey
Club Charities Trust to build The Hong Kong Jockey Club Enterprise Center. Its official
opening was followed the same day by dedication ceremonies for the four lecture
theatres it contains, which were named after Dr Chiang Chen, Mr and Mrs Lee Siu
Lun, Madam Lung Law Pui Yu and Mr Lung Kai Lam.
Further support came from various sectors of the community, including
philanthropists, corporations and alumni. The Wong Check She Charitable
Foundation pledged $20 million. The building that houses the CLP Power Wind/
Wave Tunnel Facility and the Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility will be named after the
late Wong Check She. Dr Chan Sui Kau pledged $18 million which will lead to a new
undergraduate hall due for completion in 2009 being named the “Madam Chan
Lam Moon Chun Hall” in honor of his wife. Mr Lo Ka Chung attended a ceremony
to mark the dedication of the University Center in his name following a $20 million
pledge by his charitable foundation.
HKUST’s growing international reputation was underlined when the biggest gift ever
to be received by the University from outside Hong Kong was pledged by the TT &
WF Chao Foundation. Its US$2.6 million — about HK$20 million — will endow a
chair professorship at the Institute for Advanced Study.
Meanwhile, Dr Geoffrey Yeh and Synergis Holdings Ltd pledged $5 million to
establish a chair professorship in the School of Business and Management, to
further promote teaching and research. Madam Ser Siu Hung gave $2 million for
the support of students in financial need and recruited from the Mainland, while the
first presentation ceremonies were held for the Paul and May Chu Research Awards
for Physics Students, funded by a $1 million donation from the HKUST President and
his wife.
Fong’s National Engineering Co Ltd boosted HKUST’s specialist research efforts by
giving $15 million for research and development in the area of advanced materials
and processing while the Chiap Hua Cheng Foundation donated $2 million for
research equipment for the Department of Chemical Engineering.
