T
he HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School
plays a key role in
the University’s plans for the Mainland. Its mission is to make a meaningful
impact on technological advancements in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta
(PRD) through postgraduate education and by directly helping industry with
advanced technology.
The School will strengthen HKUST’s position as a world-class university and
research leader in cutting-edge technologies.
Formally established as the University’s fifth school in December 2006, the
School was named the following month after the late Dr Henry Fok Ying Tung in
recognition of his life-long contribution to Hong Kong, China and HKUST itself.
Eight research centers and two central research facilities focusing on electronics,
IT and communications, advanced engineering materials, and energy and
environmental technologies have been set up at the Graduate School. More
centers in the biotechnology field will follow soon, and four of the five
high-impact fields identified by HKUST will then be catered for in Nansha.
Plans are now under way to build a campus within the Nansha IT Park. The new
campus is expected to be ready by the end of 2008.
Some government grants have been secured and a good start made on
collaborations on industrial projects, with strong support of the Guangzhou
authorities to help the process.
Preparations for an English teaching and learning environment are under
way while the Ministry of Education’s approval is being sought for planned
post-graduate programs. When approved, students will be based at HKUST’s
Nansha campus.
