質素
的研究及學術工作，是科大的核心
使命和策略，亦是我們發展的基石。與
其他大專院校相比，科大的獨特之處，是香港
法律明確賦予我們促進香港社會及經濟發展的
使命。
我們的策略是招納頂尖的教師及學生，要求他
們在研究領域中爭取佳績，並促進研究成果的
發展及應用。
在貫徹這策略的同時，科大亦致力推動香港的
學術及研究開發文化，為香港轉化為知識型社
會作出貢獻。
科大創校為時雖短，但憑藉過往兩年於各個領
域的不懈努力，已晉身於全球一百所頂尖學府
之列，成為國際知名的研究型大學。在香港，
科大在大學教育資助委員會的「研究評審工
作」中名列前茅。評審委員會的委員評估香港
八所主要院校，近3,500名學者的18,700項研
究成果，科大表現優秀。在研究資助局向院校
提供的研究資助中，科大獲撥款近兩成。
科大並非孤軍奮鬥，我們與新興行業建立緊密
的合作及夥伴關係。科大成立的創業公司，正
是培育年青企業家的搖籃。我們於今年亦推出
「科大校長杯」，進一步鼓勵學生積極從事創新
研究。

igh quality
research with scholarship at its base is central to
the mission and strategy of HKUST. In fact it was a key factor in
our foundation. We are specifically tasked under the laws of Hong
Kong to contribute to its social and economic development.
Our strategy is to attract the best faculty and students, to expect
and reward their best performance in research, and to facilitate the
development and application of their findings.
While building our strengths this way, the University has helped
redefine the academic as well as research and development culture
of Hong Kong. We have grown from the visionary stage to become a
dynamo for change, a force and catalyst in Hong Kong’s transition to
a knowledge-based society.
Within a short time span, HKUST has earned a reputation as a
leading international research university as shown by our rankings in
the top 100 universities in the world for the past two years in all our
fields of endeavor. On a local level, this year we again came top in
the Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the University Grants
Committee whose panel members assessed some 18,700 research
output items by around 3,500 academics in Hong Kong’s eight
major tertiary institutions. HKUST was also awarded nearly 20% of
the total grant money given to those institutions by the Research
Grants Council.
We do not act alone in this. HKUST is helped by collaboration
and partnerships with industry in new and emerging fields.
At the same time, the University nurtures young entrepreneurs
in start-up companies. This year we also launched the HKUST
President’s Cup to further enhance students’ interests and initiatives
in innovative research.
