Undergraduate Education
E
ducating the next generation of community leaders is
our core objective. To accomplish this, the University
delivers to its 6,000 undergraduates an excellent
academic education and a holistic student experience.
We provide them with the personal qualities and skills
they will need to realize their potential.
HKUST offers more than 40 undergraduate programs in
business, engineering and science. Class size is small —
with an average of only 40 students — and courses are
delivered by a highly qualified international faculty.
The curriculum continued to evolve throughout the year
with an emphasis on newly emerged interdisciplinary
fields. In September 2009, the BSc in Risk Management
and Business Intelligence was launched. This degree
program links a broad business education with
quantitative skills and computing applications, which
is an important new aspect for business. The program
has attracted many highly-qualified applicants. The new
BSc in Environmental Management and Technology saw
its first student intake in September 2010. Graduates
from this program will gain a foundation in science,
engineering and business to equip them for employment
in the growing green-jobs sector.
There is no denying that facilities for study at HKUST
are excellent. The Information Commons in the Library,
established initially in 2006 to link up reference services,
technical support, high-end software and hardware and
on-line resources, was expanded during the year to meet
increasing user demands. As part of the new capital
developments for the four-year curriculum, a large
Learning Commons will be created in 2011 on Floor
LG1 of the Library to further support learning activities
on campus. Video capture of lectures for students has
also been implemented, covering over 2,000 course-
sections each semester. In the meantime, m.HKUST —
a free iPhone application — is bringing mobile access to
education closer to students.
HKUST is a leading research university and this creates
a unique opportunity for our students to enrich their
studies through direct contact with faculty members
involved in research. The Undergraduate Research
Opportunities Program (UROP) has been growing
steadily over the years and is now able to link up more
than 250 students every year with on-going research
projects. UROP provides students with the opportunity
to work with leading researchers in state-of-the art
research facilities.
Internationalization
An important feature of HKUST’s undergraduate
education is our international outlook. Internationalization
is a major component of our long-term strategic
development. HKUST recruits an increasing number
of students from the Mainland and overseas. In 2009-
10, 13% of our intake came from outside Hong Kong.
The non-local pool has become more diversified over
the years. Thanks to 156 exchange partners across
the globe, on average one-third of our undergraduate
students have the opportunity to experience an
international exchange for at least one semester before
graduation. This puts HKUST among the top universities
in the world in terms of international exposure provided
for our undergraduate student body. Every semester,
our campus is brightened up by the presence of 300
exchange students from around the world, bringing a
highly valuable international dimension to university life.
An exchange sponsorship fund has been established to
provide financial support to help needy students who
wish to go on exchange. The ultimate goal is to offer
exchange opportunities to 50% of the undergraduate
student body. The Business School reached this target
in 2007, and surpassed it in 2009 when the percentage
increased sharply from 10% in 2002 to over 50% last
year. HKUST students travel to the US, Canada, Europe,
the UK, Mainland China and many other countries on
exchange. The University also attracts exchange students
from many overseas universities.
Four-year Degree
The implementation of the four-year degree reached an
important milestone in June 2010, when the University
Senate approved the four-year degree curriculum for
the Schools of Science, Engineering, Business and
