KUST
is a highly international institution
and ha s pu t t r emendou s e f f o r t s i n t o
internationalizing the learning experience for our
students. The internationalization initiative is being
driven by the International and Mainland Students
and Programs Office.
The University has been actively recruiting top non-
local undergraduate students to study full-time
at HKUST. So far we have successfully recruited
top achievers from 25 countries, including India,
Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Norway,
Germany, the UK and a number of other European
countries. For the first time, we have also recruited
students from the US, Chile, Colombia and Africa.
We also offer scholarships to attract the brightest
young minds from around the world. Undergraduate
scholarships for international students range from
one-time awards to full-tuition awards covering
school fees and living expenses for the duration of
the students’ studies.
The Swire International Young Fellows Program,
launched in August 2005, is one of the largest
s cho l a r sh i p s chemes . I n 2007-08 , s i x fu l l -
time international undergraduates were given
scholarships under the Swire International Young
Fellows Program.
HKUST also puts great emphasis on developing local
students with a global outlook. Students are often
encouraged to participate in student exchange
programs to increase their international exposure.
In 2007-08, a total of 497 local students were sent
overseas to study for between a semester and a
year in more than 140 exchange partner institutions
worldwide.
Visits and Agreements
HKUST has been attracting visitors from the
academia and governments and other sectors from
countries around the globe. In 2007-08, a total
of 65 overseas universities sent institutional-level
delegations to HKUST to explore the possibility of
various forms of academic collaboration.
The School of Business and Management has signed
up for a landmark student exchange partnership
with the McIntire School of Commerce of the
University of Virginia, which became the School’s
100th exchange partner.
