enjoys strong academic exchange and
research links with the Mainland. Our strong
presence on the Mainland includes the HKUST
Business School Center in Beijing and Shenzhen,
the Zhejiang Advanced Manufacturing Institute in
Hangzhou, the Peking University-HKUST Shenzhen-
Hong Kong Institute, the Shenzhen PKU-HKUST
Medical Center, and the HKUST Fok Ying Tung
Graduate School in Nansha.
Our research collaboration with the Mainland at
institutional and school levels covers key projects
including the national “863” and “973” projects.
Mainland Student Exchange
Program
The University has established undergraduate
student exchange programs with 10 major Mainland
institutions. The exchange programs have proved
to be popular with both HKUST and Mainland
students. In 2007-08, 100 students were sent from
our partner universities on the Mainland for one-
semester exchange at HKUST, while 54 of our
students went on a one-semester exchange to one
of the Mainland exchange partners.

Mainland Undergraduates
Recruitment
With a growing number of outstanding Mainland
students being recruited over the years, HKUST
has been perceived by many Mainlanders as one
of the highly preferred institutions for pursuing
higher education. In 2007-08, the University
recruited another pool of outstanding Mainland
students, including the Mainland Joint Entrance
Examinations (JEE) top scorers from Liaoning and
Jilin provinces, as well as gold medalists of the 8th
Asian Physics Olympiad. Students admitted on the
basis of JEE results have all attained scores qualifying
for admission to the top 10 institutions on the
Mainland.
Donations
CNOOC Ltd donated $1 million, part of which
was used to sponsor the visit of China’s deep sea
research vessel Dayang Yihao to Hong Kong, while
the balance was used for funding marine education
and research programs of the Coastal Marine
Laboratory.
