ithin 17 short years
, HKUST has
achieved an international academic
status beyond expectations. This year
marked the introduction of the master
plan for campus development, known
thematically as “Expansion for Excellence:
HKUST’s 2020 Campus”.
The expansion of our stunning bay-shore
campus is needed to meet two major
challenges – the surge in student numbers
with the implementation of four-year
degree by 2012, and the educational and
research goals outlined in the University’s
Strategic Plan. Key milestones achieved in
the expansion plan included:
Having appointed world-renowned
architects Wood Bagot, in partnership
with local architects DLN, to design the
Lee Shau Kee Business Building and the
Institute for Advanced Study, together
with the associated residences, we
are now at the detailed design stage
and are seeking Government funding
approval from the Finance Committee
of the Legislative Council. Construction
is expected to commence in mid-2009.
When complete in 2011, these buildings
will provide over 20,000 sq.m. of top-
notch accommodation for teaching and
research, with an emphasis on distinct
design and sustainable development.
The start of construction in 2009 of a
3,000 sq.m. extension to the northern
end of the academic building. Following
completion two years later, the existing
library will be substantially altered to
create an innovative student-centered
learning environment at the heart of
the University.
