HKUST 2006-2007 Annual Report

Our commitment to help China’s development resulted recently in:
•
The granting of one of the last pieces of land in the Shenzhen High-Tech
Industrial Park (SHIP) in mid 2006 for HKUST to establish its own IER (Industry,
Education and Research) facility next to the existing PKU-HKUST Shenzhen-Hong
Kong Institution IER Building. The HKUST Shenzhen IER Building to be built on
the site is scheduled for completion in late 2009.
•
Ground breaking ceremony in early 2007 for the IER joint venture to construct
the Shenzhen PKU-HKUST Medical Centre Building next to the Peking University
Shenzhen Hospital. The building is scheduled for completion in late 2008 and
will add 220,000 sq meter of research, incubation and teaching facilities to the
Medical Centre.
•
The opening of the Zhejiang Advanced Manufacturing Institute in Hangzhou.
The Zhejiang Government provided RMB16 million as well as office space
and facilities. HKUST is supplying research expertise and leadership in
manufacturing technology.
•
An agreement with the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for
National Defense which will see HKUST collaborate on China’s lunar program in
data analysis. This will also enable faculty members to gain further expertise in
aerospace technology.
•
The launch of the high-level Nansha Science and Technology Forum. It will hold
ten sessions over a period of two years from February 2006 at Nansha IT Park to
explore science and technology issues of key importance to China’s social and
economic development.
At an industry level, blue-chip Chinese companies such as telecommunications
network provider, Huawei Technologies, tapped HKUST’s expertise through the
establishment of a joint research and development center with the Electronic
and Computer Engineering Department. The Computer Science and Engineering
Department began collaborating with Boeing Phantom Works, Tsinghua University
in Beijing, and Southeast University in Nanjing to research and develop new wireless
communications technology.
The University continued to welcome members of academia and government during
the year. More than 50 high-level delegations visited HKUST, including: Prof Luo
Haocai, Vice Chairman of CPPCC National Committee; Prof Baoyan Duan, President
of Xidian University; Prof Hailiang Gu, Secretary of the Party Committee of Wuhan
University; Prof Zihe Rao, President of Nankai University; Prof Zhihong Xu, President
