he School of Engineering,
the largest of the University’s schools,
sees engineering as an education, not just a profession. It believes that as
engineering itself changes, so too should the way it is taught.
The School has six departments: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering,
Computer Science & Engineering, Electronic & Computer Engineering, Industrial
Engineering & Logistics Management, and Mechanical Engineering.
A pioneer in dual degree programs, the school offers a four-year undergraduate
Technology and Management program, run jointly with the School of Business
and Management. The first of its kind in Hong Kong, this program produces
graduates able to tackle issues and create opportunities from both the
technological and business points of view.
The School plans to move away from the single option of conventional programs
by 2012 and offer three tracks to cater for students wanting to become
professional engineers, those pursuing postgraduate studies, and students
preparing for a diverse career.
Three new undergraduate programs will be introduced in 2009: BioEngineering,
Environmental Science & Technology, and Risk Management & Business
Intelligence. Nano Science & Technology will follow in 2012.
The School’s pursuit of excellence has been consistently recognized through high
positions in global rankings, including HKUST’s place since 2004 in the
Times
Higher Education Supplement’s
top 25 engineering and technology universities.
This year it ranked 17th.
The School also partners with industry and government to help them meet their
needs. It has achieved substantial success in bringing industrial R & D to the
market for commercialization. It has also been in the forefront of technology
development and transfer to further Hong Kong’s economic, industrial,
commercial and environmental objectives through its Engineering Industrial
Consortium, Technology Transfer Center, Applied Technology Center, the HKUST
R and D Corporation Ltd and a partnership with the Hong Kong Science and
Technology Parks Corporation.
